The emasculation of the modern male has been a very intentional, long term social engineering agenda that we’ve all been subjected to our entire lives in various ways from the mass media (especially TV), government, schools, the corporate business environment, etc. Pipe smoking is a great way to help counter that, and the tradition must be kept alive by the younger generation.
Hats off to all you younger briar brothers out there, and the more you can spread it amongst your age group the better! :puffy:

Hey Hobie, my birthday is May 23, 1989. I know what you are all going to say. "You are too handsome to be only 21" or "you are way to mature" or "damn I wish I could be you" or something else extra flattering  JK JK

igloo and mjtannen, that's freaking awsome!
While my facial hair growth is only very moderate, I'm indirectly drawing attention to it by repeatedly skipping the first classes (which start way to early) to go to the barber :P
I don't believe that I'm motivating a lot of other guys of my age to pick up the pipe. They mostly don't even have an idea how college/university is like. However smoking does gain me some respect and raves from the ladies :). @Bubba, you know how it's like. My birthday is December 4, 1992 (not so great vintage winewise)
pipe smoking = cool + mannered + 2yrs military service in a cavalry regiment 8)

mjtannen.. your post is my favorite so far. words to live and die by.
i'm 26 years old and have been smoking a pipe for about 6 months. i have yet to venture out into public with my new found hobby. i must admit though, the idea of carrying one of my prized pipes into public is not as relaxing as sitting in a nice comfy chair and relaxing in sancutary that is home.
now that the weather is getting nicer, i will be doing this outside. but in any public place would unsettle me a littlebit, but i'm still a novice i guess.
for future reference i do have a small beard... coincidence?!?!?!

I am 24 years old, and frequently walk in the park or even just sit on benches and read while smoking, often enough people stop and chat with me, but it is rarely pipe driven!

I was sitting in the park today researching an assignment and enjoying the sun with a smoke. During the 2 hours I spent with my pipe in the park I was approached 6 times. All positive and mostly people telling me about granddads/dads who smoked a pipe and how much they loved the smell.
I am glad other young pipe smokers out there are keeping the tradition going, and so are others it seems. But they still seem surprised by my age and the pipe clenched in my teeth.

Billy123,
Ya know, someone said that exact same thing to me last week in Manhattan. Literally word for word.
It's a bit annoying, but I don't think he meant any disrespect. He was just commenting on something that, to him, was rare. Perhaps he really enjoys weed and he could see that you were really enjoying your pipe. Maybe all he meant to convey was, "hey we have something sort of in common that makes us both happy."
by the way, great comments by mjtannen and brian64 couldn't agree more. I love walking into a store with my pipe clenched. The looks of shock/HE CAN"T REALLY BE SMOKING INSIDE COULD HE?!! hahaha

There will always be people making a comment. Worse yet, they all think they're the first one who's ever made such a comment to you. They're often accompanied with a hearty laugh, an attempt to get you to laugh at their witty comment (after you didn't).
Far worse, though, are those who accuse you (and actually believe it) of smoking a pipe just to look more intelligent. This belief says more about them than anything else.

I've been taken aside by cops a few times because they didn't know that my pipe was legal. After some scrutiny they were fine with it and one even said "Smells nice kid, be good now!"
But yeah, that was when I had long-ass hippy hair that went down past my shoulders. I think I've grown up a bit and now that I've got some sideburns and a few suits, I look a bit more 'legit.'

The more visible we are with our pipes in public, the better - as long as the aroma of our pipes antagonizes no one. Unless we're spotted enjoying our pipes in public spaces, the clichés and stereotypes aren't likely to erode. I think it's beneficial for all of us, regardless of our age brackets, to be seen confidently smoking our pipes wherever smoking is allowed so that the nonsmoking public (as well as closet smokers and potential pipe smokers) see that our hobby spans all age and class demographics.
Of course, I can identify with the hesitation to smoke a pipe in public. In my teens, I'd only venture into a public space with my pipe if I knew I'd only encounter strangers. After I turned 18, I slowly developed the confidence to smoke my pipe on my university campus, on the street, at social events, and - of course - in pipe shops. The peculiar looks inhibited me at first, but I eventually discovered that the vast majority of reactions to my pipe were positive. If anyone took notice of me and my pipe during my teens and 20s, responses would range from a nod to a smile to a compliment; people would remark on the pleasant aroma of my blend, what a nice pipe I was smoking, or how good it was to see a young guy enjoying a pipe. I've honestly encountered very few unfavorable reactions to my smoldering pipe. Although I'm older now, I occasionally get a comment about the incongruity of being "younger" and being a pipe smoker. Go figure - I still take these encounters as compliments!

It actually hadn't occurred to me that I should be hesitant about smoking my pipe in public...
I've been having a post-lunch bowl in the smoking area outside my office building, and another while walking the dogs in the evening. Haven't had any issues in either locale.
Then again, it's quite possible that people are clucking their tongues and/or rolling their eyes at me; that's just not something I'd ever notice.

Heckuva gaff-rigged main you've got there. What's the rest of her look like? =]

Since I don't smoke in public, the only comment I have received is from my daughter, "Daddy, you smell terrible! Can you sleep outside tonight?" Since there was a foot of snow outside, I asked if I could take a shower instead.
Also, I also enjoy how my beard makes the smoke last longer.
