Well when I first started smoking a pipe at 17 there were many times I felt very uncomfortable smoking a pipe in public, now at 54 I’m fine smoke one of my favorite pipes in front of anyone.
The funny thing is I still hear the occasional stupid comment like… “Hey is that your Grandpa’s pipe”.

I think what is really being observed here is not about pipes or tobacco per se (because there are many other things that could serve as an example) but is actually about the societal hive brain.
I believe it is a myth that everyone has individual identities. In truth, it is probably only about 10% of the population who are genuine individuals. Most people just simply react according to their programming…they have no idea why they think the way they do…they’re just plugged into the matrix, and it dictates to them how to think and behave...and currently, pipe smoking (especially by younger people) is not part of matrix programming.
Anyone who they perceive as being unplugged from the hive brain matrix, for any reason, is an alien being to them.
I’d highly recommend the following documentary which covers the last 100 years or so of mass programming of society, and exactly how it’s been done. All of this really started with Sigmund Freud’s American nephew, Edward Bernays.

Fab feedback guys. Lawrence, loved you Total stranger experience - I get that sort of response as a biker, people from all walks of life, of all ages just communicate over a common interest. I guess there are just more bikers than pipe smokers.
I think the Collin's & anotherspace's uni/collage campus probably provides a huge amount of tolerance for the unexpected.
I agree Holms almost certainly would have partaken of a little opium though - and Dr Watson was clearly a smack head.
I also wonder how much the cultural divide of the USA vs the UK makes a difference to the reception we get. My experience is that people in the USA have a much more accepting attitude to self expression (this is a sweeping generalisation - Texas is not the same as New England, I know). But Americans tend to be less judgemental of people's right to be themselves, if they are thin or fat, a pensioner on roller blades is applauded where they would be scorned here as a lunatic. Unless, of course they are from aristocracy, in which case it's just eccentric!.

Perhaps I am eccentric, without the blue blood!

billy123: That certainly used to be true about American society, but not so much anymore. It's become very conformist in most ways, and seems to be getting worse all the time. And a lot of things that are seen as old fashioned traditions such as pipe smoking are especially scorned these days.

I'm 23 years old and it is not easy being a pipe smoker in this town. I receive a lot of awkward comments and lingering stares just for being younger. It is rare enough to see a pipe smoker in these parts; people feel the need to make a statement when somebody is a little different than themselves.
Not all of the comments are bad, however. One day I received a compliment on the smell of my pipe from a lady who paused to sit on the bench alongside me as she rested from walking her dog. Within the hour, a driver got out of his parked vehicle and came over to tell me it was nice to see a pipe smoker - reminded him of his dad, and though he never smoked anymore he had a small pipe collection. I wish I received more positive attention like that rather than face ignorant folk all the time.

Hadnt read Lawrence's article, however, haveing rode HD's for over 35 years and approx 100 hrs of INK on my can-vass, I have grown immune to these looks/retorts. If you/I am in a 'legal smoking area', then yuk them if they cant handle it. Often times we have to turn the other cheek until they are both slapped, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Some wont let it go regardless, and we used to have a phrase.."DONT MEAN NUTHIN"..well, often times it truely dies. I often enjoy the snide remarks and off looks and count it as jealousy b'cause those offended have not the BALLS enough to do their own thing. My 'bending' in public is to smoke an aro...not many people complain about it, those that do..well, they can go elsewhere...or take my pipe!

I just got back to my hotel from walking the San Antonio river walk (Texas, for those across the sea) and I got two comments and a ton of approving and disapproving looks. The first comment I received was from a 15-17 year old and he screamed "dude's smoking weed in that pipe!" I just glared and walked on. The second was from a gorgeous lady in her mid to late 20s and she said "Wow, nice pipe! Looking good!" that made my day! And if I didn't have a wife right next to me I would have had to stop and talk with the lovely lady.
To those of you that don't know, I am only 21 years old. I will be 22 in May.

I am really glad someone started a thread such as this.I myself feel very self conscious about smoking on public as well. I am 24 and you bet I get some weird looks. And for some strange reason it did make me feel uneasy about it.But I do agree with what a lot of you folks say here and does make me feel way better knowing I ain't the only one feeling this way.

I say if they don't like it, they can hold their damn breath. I got just as much right to be out smokin my pipe as they do walkin their dog!

Happy smoking! :puffy:

Where I live. You can't smoke in parks anymore. Which is a shame because I would love to sit in the park and have a pipe.

Can't smoke in parks! That's an outrage - where s that? I guess it only a question of time before smoking in public is banned too so that we don't let kids see us doing it and lead them into bad ways!
But until the police state takes over I'm with Scott - only I smoke my pipe AND walk the dog, usually still feeling self-conscious naturally :)
Sometimes I think it's amusing though - drove past some workmen digging the road recently and as I slowed down I saw the young guy stop digging to gorp - you could see him thinking "is that guy the baseball hat actually smoking a pipe?"

If you put any weight in someone else's opinions; you've already lost the battle.

I've only had one person be dumb enough to comment towards me about my pipe smoking anyways. Needless to say, I returned their rude comment with a few words stated calmly. When that had no success... I growled a few simple choice words and the young lady left crying. Tears are such nice things to look upon. It's a shame when people think they have a right to intrude upon your solitude and break up a nice lovely afternoon spent puffin' under a tree on your own yard/property.

I figure those making the comment are just trying to bond ; however awkward they may be.
If the laws not involved ; its just not an issue.

Ironically, smoking a pipe when you are young doesn't make you look older, but the very opposite. The ultimate anti-aging technique :P

either I'm just not good at noticing what people are looking at, or I'm pretty much invisible with my pipe -- or just me altogether heh heh. I've gotten one 'nice smell' and one "nice pipe" and that's it in the entire time I've had pipes. I don't much mind though, there are other ways to start conversation, and if I want to talk about my pipes, well I will.

i live in kalifornia....
when i smoke in publick i have 2 pipes with me, one filled with a nice aromatic and the other filled with a vile smelling, (but nice tasting) english blend. i start with the aro and if anyone bitches i put it away and pull out the english.
their smug looks when i put the one pipe away is replaced by horror when they get a wiff of the other..
i am old and crippled. my pipes and scotch are the only thing besides a ride on my bike that i have anymore. don't poke me because i bite.

My new thing is to smoke in stores , Lowes ,Home Depot , Office Max,Wallmart etc most of the time I manage to get away with it . It seems most people dont know what to think or say . It is not every day you see a 350 lb man smoking a pipe in these places . I had to grin when I overheard a Lowes employee say [there is that pipe smoking guy again to coworker ].If confronted I just say sorry and go about my way . Try it ,it is a hoot .

"My new thing is to smoke in stores"....ha ha! I always keep my unlit pipe clenched in my jaw when in stores. Anyone who does not like it does not have to shop there. Any rude sales personnel get my finger and the message. When it comes to a beard, my advice is to grow one. The aroma of your last smoke on your beard just extends your pleasure between smokes. With regard to age, if you are old enough to have a drink, drive a car, go to fight a war, you are certainly age appropriate to enjoy a pipe. It is time for men to exercise the fact that they have big hairy nuts between their legs even though they wear pants in public.

Guys At 29 I like the fact we are carrying on a tradition of savoring our tobacco. Since I started when I was in college(Took a huge break for several years), My experience hasn't been awful reactions. Most times if someone hates cigarettes, they don't like a pipe. It's my hobby not theirs. I smoke in my truck even on my old campus if I have to pick up paperwork. Even though the campus went smoke free with nonsmokers protesting for smoker's rights. People don't stop someone who is determined as Mjtannen would say "with big hairy man parts".
