I don't even ever remember seeing a pipecleaner. These were my grandfather's brothers. I was always with them when I was younger, running errands, helping in the gardens, fishing, hunting, they always had a pipe burning, and not a single pipecleaner crosses my memories.

I buy pipes that I believe will smoke my favorite blends better than any other types of pipes. Pretty easy really.

Pipe cleaners have been available at least since the early 20th century and feathers were used before commercial pipe cleaners. If the pipe was a clay, it went into the hearthside fire to get cleaned out.

I’ve been refurbishing estate pipes for the last few months (it gave me something to do during the pandemic) and I’ve found that Craigslist has a lot very old pipes come up every now and again. Tomorrow I’m picking up 7 pipes from the 1910s-1930s.
