This. I believe that the way many of us fill our pipes comes out the same way, with a tighter pack at the top, looser as you go down the bowl. Just not as time consuming— and dare I say anal— as the plethora of methods with tiresome Youtube diatribes.

When it comes to packing tobacco, I find nothing is as critical as the humidity at which you like to smoke it. If you like your tobacco on the dry almost crispy side, just load it so that before lighting there is a bit of resistance when you apply suction. But there are some exceptions, for example with Tabac Semois green: even though it comes very dry, I find it best to pack it very, very tightly. With blends like FVF where I do find a bit more moisture in the tobacco renders the smoke more flavourful, I follow a packing scheme where I load the bottom half of the bowl a bit looser than the top half. Once lit, I tamp the tobacco's coal cookie so as to maintain the initial 'slight' resistance throughout the smoke.
