I haven't been enjoying much of anything tobacco wise the past two days. It isn't because my tongue is burnt. Sure, I packed a few bowls that didn't burn properly, but that can happen. This has begun to really bother me. I keep tasting the same nasty chemical undertone no matter what I put in no matter which pipe.

I've not heard of anyone else describing this before.

Maybe I'm getting sick? I don't feel badly. I even smell this 'whatever it is' without even smoking. It is difficult to describe the taste and smell, except that it isn't pleasant.

At first I thought it might be the soap I was using to wash my hands. (Old Spice hand soap)...because it does have a strong smell.

I had a small sample of Ennerdale sitting in a plastic bag and put it into a glass jar. The smell persists. I can't pinpoint its origin.

Disconcerting? You bet! I've got biotene, and tea, and water and coffee. I haven't had any alcohol in weeks.

I haven't changed my diet.

The only 'stuff' I can smoke that almost tastes like it should are Lat blends. Everything else tastes somehow tainted.

HELP ME!

Any new medications, or a change in doses of something you have been taking?

No. Nothing I can think of has changed. Well...one thing..but we don't discuss that here. I've recently stopped smoking an herbal medication...do you think that's it?

I don't know for sure. The human body is an amazing and confusing organism... I asked about the medicine because my mom was given something to combat nausea when she was going through chemo that made her smell and taste pencil shavings constantly. Anything is possible. Hope you get it figured out soon.

I just had blood drawn last Tuesday, my yearly. I'm going in this Tuesday for the follow up. I did look at the lab results online and I didn't see anything extraordinary for me, but then, my medical license is non existent.

I've been feeling just fine. Tired maybe, but overall, nothing unusual for me and my advanced age.

Food tastes great!

I would say that it could be allergies, check to see if something has been high in your area lately, i.e. grass pollen, tree pollen, mold, etc. If not, I would say your are coming down with a cold or cold like virus. My tastes go "off" a few days before I get a sinus infection or cold. Has done that ever since I was a kid.

I would second sjmiller. Sinus allergies do effect your taste and smell. For some reason this summer my taste and smell leave everything but latakia tasteless and oderless for a couple days at a time. It's happened twice since late spring . Only last two or three days though, then everything is back to normal. I attribute it to allergies.

I'm not a Dr. but I play one on an internet forum.... I think it's just your taste buds reacting to your 'cleanse'.
Maybe if you don't smoke buds, you can't taste buds.? :puffy:

scrooge...aw shucks man..that's nice to 'hear'. I'd hate to leave you all too. I'm scheduled to see what the 'routine' blood panel tells my GP on Tuesday. Part of my annuals.

I just smoked a bowl of Pirate Kake and it's the best bowl I've had in a couple of days. A'course it's a heavy lat blend, but still...I'm hoping for the best. I had some VA earlier too and it seems things may be getting back to normal. I have hope.

On the bright side, I'm conserving tobacco lately. :)

So, I saw my GP this a.m. to have my weight, pulse and blood pressure checked by his assistant so that he could bill Medicare for my annual wellness checkup and to follow up on the routine/annual blood panel tests with him.

He listened to my chest in front and back while I took deep breaths and we discussed the results of the tests.

Everything is right where it ought to be except that I'm low on vitamin B12. That might help explain occasional (I NEVER spell that word correctly the first time)feeling of fatigue.

I asked him if I should resume the regimen of daily B12 supplements he'd started me on two years previously when I was bleeding out my rectum on a daily basis in large part due to the job I had been performing and which stopped once I retired. (no, I wasn't a male prostitute, cigarmaster) He said yuh.

My lungs are clear as a bell, btw, at least stethoscope wise.

I didn't mention any changes to my palate recently.

Maybe I did affect my oral PH balance in stopping the use of medicinal THC?

I will say that I'd been a wake and baker for at least the duration of my pipe smoking...judiciously small dosages, which I may replace with edibles if I feel I can't live w/o.

I have noticed a change in my dream patterns and recovered a bit of short term memory and also a little more self motivation, so, there's that.

Tobacco flavor seems to be returning slowly too.

That's most likely the solution right there ... a little break for the tongue!
Starting and stopping the herb has never affected my taste buds ... dreams, memory and motivation OTOH ...
Glad the flavor is returning and the check-up went well. Shoot me a PM if you ever have Lab test questions.

newbroom...the male prostitute line truly caused me to burst out laughing to myself!! Hilarious brother!!
I was going to suggest a medication issue too but since that's been covered I've got nothin'. Hopefully you will figure it out or it will work itself out. I know for me that sometimes I feel like a good bowl but when I light up it's just not enjoyable. This for me usually has to do with it being too hot outside to be enjoyable. :puffy:

cobguy, it was only after I smoked some of your "Black Mamba" that I had a stretch of tongue coat/fatigue whatever, and I'm sure that must have been a koinydink. A few scrubs with a toothbrush and some biotene and rest and I was back in the race.

Did you maybe load that with perique? I haven't been brave enough to smoke it uncut ever since, although it tasted great the first few bowls.

As for the labs, I told the General I liked to get my vitamins via my food sources and momentarily forgot that it was liver I'd been implementing. I asked him what food would provide me with the vitamin and he said red meat.

I haven't eaten ANY for a couple of years, except for calves liver, which IS red, but hardly fits the description. I do enjoy the taste of it, occasionally. (I did it again, mis-spelled spelled it wrong.)

Are you a doctor? I forgot what your expertise is medically. Not all my memory has returned.

There is a healthy portion in there ... are you sensitive to Perique?

No ... doctors don't know diddly about labs. LOL ... just kidding!! :nana:
I've been a Medical Laboratory Scientist for 20+ years. If it's fluid and comes from your body ... I've tested it.
