I'm confused. Why is having a nice tamp a problem? I find it a very weird argument, it's like saying I can't have an artisan pipe because a cob will do or my Laguiole pipe knife isn't allowed at your pipe club meeting.
I'm seriously at a loss. We all have different tastes and budgets.
But judging someone by the tamper they choose? Evidently someone needs a life.

This thread is getting ugly fast. For the record, I am not judging anyone, I am saying that FOR ME a tamper has little value. Apologies to anyone I may have offended. Moderator, please close this thread if needed.

Two and half inches of bamboo that is not even symmetrical where it meets the key ring end . I don't derive a lot of pleasure from a useless trinket . A fool and his money are soon parted so yeah pretty stupid . But if you like it by all means , buy it . Just don't ask me to buy your lunch .

I use my index finger 90% of the time, however for some people it might help with the allure or ritual of puffing on their favorite pipe, makes no difference to me.

To each his/her own. I've blown good money on sillier things.
I did laugh my ass off when I saw the picture, though. For a $20 tamper, it's not very pretty.

I'm pretty sure that nails bought for anything more than a couple of dollars per pound are pretty silly too.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Is this the wrong place to admit I purchased a limited edition Lord of the Rings, handled by Gandalf himself, tamper/twig/stick that has a natural bark finish and artisanal rustic "broken" ends for $60.....they said the certificate of authenticity is in the mail.

I own a few different tampers including a antler one that was gifted to me. The one I use and carry most has a little knife on it since I use knifes pretty often. If I don't have it I use a pocket knife or finger.

Now this would be a way to siphon money out of my wallet. I am a sucker for all things LOTR.

@jndyer, if it was whittled with elvish runes would that make it a 100.00 tamper? :D
I do wish those who criticize other's possessions, tastes, proclivities etc. would STFU.
Unfortunately for you, this is America. You have a right to spend your money as you wish, and I have a right to voice my opinion.

Of course you have that right, and I defend that right.
But when it comes to belittling others, on a private forum, you have the right to be ostracized. So, please STFU.

Okay, here's the scorecard: Highplains throws a grenade....it goes of, then he apologizes....gets chided (deservedly) and then doubles down.
That tamper just got more free marketing than any tamper in the history of ever.
So I guess I was correct earlier. Someone needs to get a life.
Friendly advice HighPlainsDrifter, you definitely have that right, but we are guests here. If you walked into my house and voiced a petty opinion about my tampers, I'd ask you to leave.

I like my tampers to have a convex end though, so you can tamp the sides of the chamber while leaving the center of the tobacco higher than the sides.
On my shelf is a little metal pocket tamper where the circular tamping plate is hinged to the stick part so it can fold up flat in your pocket, but it lets you easily "cone-tamp" if you fold it open half-way. I like doing the "cone tamp".

If I owned a Tsuge Bamboo pipe (I don't) I might like to have a matching tamper to satisfy my OCD.
I have a Tsuge briar tamper, thought it might have been a little pricey for what it was, mainly because the metal end has some kind of cheap metal with gold-colored plating on it, rather than polished bare metal. I'd rather have polished bare aluminum or stainless vs. gold-colored plating.

I...make...tampers...
Hi "ejames", did you ever know or work with that hammerpilot guy? You posted one of the tampers that you made and it reminded me of some of that guys work from a few years ago. I asked about it in that thread but didn't hear back, so just wondering if you knew him or was inspired by his work or something.

I have to admit that I've had my eye on the Savinelli Miele Pipe particularly because it comes with a cool honey dipper tamper--so, yeah, if the $20.00 bamboo tamper appealed to me and I had the dosh to blow I'd probably buy it. I play tennis, so if I ever came across a tennis racquet tamper for $20.00 I'd definitely buy it!! I kinda dig the accessories that come with pipe smoking (pipe bags, wind screens, tampers, mason jars, etc).

jpmcwjr, I did't belittle others, I belittled a tamper.

Ashdigger, anyone who would "chide" someone after they apologize has absolutely no class in my book. I am perfectly able to admit when I am wrong (and did), but I am not about to let a bunch of self righteous pricks walk all over me. Big difference. If the forum administrators don't like my opinion, they can delete this post as I already mentioned- but not some 46 post jong who is running his fool mouth.
