Highplains, self-righteous pricks? Walk all over you? Oh, so your opinion of me is based on my post count? Good to know. You seem like a quality guy, you know, with 851 posts.
Good luck dude and you obviously have zero clue how sensitive bamboo is, it had to tamp down its tears.

Hi "ejames", did you ever know or work with that hammerpilot guy? You posted one of the tampers that you made and it reminded me of some of that guys work from a few years ago. I asked about it in that thread but didn't hear back, so just wondering if you knew him or was inspired by his work or something.
I seem to remember you asking about that gent and thought I did respond to you but may have had a brain fart and just thought I did. Are you talking about this guy-- http://www.aab-taxfreepipes.com/group.asp?group=1245&vat=false&lang=hk#.V7jpgBKaKCl I became interested in tampers soon after I picked up the pipe in 2005. Made a bunch of them from sticks and twigs, then started chopping the bowls off of cheap pipes and using the shank and stem to make a tamper. I did a lot of looking online at several tamper makers websites and picked up a lot of ideas from them. I was especially intrigued by those with a built in pick, but could not make them from scratch until I got a small metal lathe. Mr. Rakowski may have been one I was inspired by or borrowed ideas from--can't say for sure because the moniker "hammerpilot" nor does his name ring any bells.

For twenty bucks, and with its attractive "chrome" top piece and tamper end, this might make a good gift.
Yes, with that chrome ring, wouldn't it make an interesting pendant to wear? :D

I have over 1000 posts and many people who know me would say that I am often a dick.
A dick with a heart of gold.... But still a dick

Highplains, why do people spend thousands, even millions of dollars on functionless art? Got any wall-hangings in your house?
What boggles my mind is that people will spend 50% more on a pipe which has a shiny nickel ring on the shank. I just can't believe the production and cost behind the inclusion of that piece of nickel warrants that much of a price surge, but it makes the pipe so much more attractive for those with flashy taste, and if I could afford it I'd find myself drawn to such flashy pipes like a packrat is drawn to anything shiny. I actually do have a couple of ringed pipes, but they were bargains. Science has demonstrated the high degree of genetic similarity between humans and rats, but I won't go any further down that tangent because most people don't find that to be much of a fun discussion.
Their's just something about that aesthetics thing.

Ya just gotta love forum sites. Aside from the plethora of shared and informative information one can glean from them they also never fail to entertain.

The price is $20 now, but the original price is $26. If you're on the fence about this tamper, I would jump at it before it goes back to full price! To each their own, and whatever floats your boat. I wouldn't buy it, but I've definitely spent a lot more on something more wasteful.

Pylorns, that tamper looks awesome!
But the great thing about using a finger is that it's much easier to reach for when I'm feeling really lazy. :puffy: Not as convenient when I'm dressed to go somewhere sociable later, in light-colored clothing.

I know there will be laughter. But, I bought a bag of old fashioned round wooden clothespins from Ace Hardware. The round knob on one end is a great tamper and the split tongs on the other will loosen up ash and let you dump and relight.
I think the bag cost me 4 bucks for about 20 of them. Link below will take you to a site filled with the wooden jewels. I love 'em.

I have one of the original Ming Kahuna tampers that just sits in my bag. Also have a nice one a friend gave me that has ivory on it. Its probably a century old, but never use it. Mostly use the tamper in my Corona Pipemaster. I did find these smaller lathed tampers at a local tobacconist for $10 each. Kind of pricey but I use them when scraping the left over tobacco out and not have to worry about doing any damage inside the bowl.
To each his own I guess. I've known plenty of pipesters that used whatever was on hand and others that have a huge tamper collection. Its just another side of this hobby we love.

I have two eJames tampers and I really like them. I have made many tampers of many types of wood and other materials. But I admit I forgot to bring one with me to my last pipe club meeting. I found a branch in the parking lot and had a working tamper after about a minute with my knife. Not near as nice a one made of morta or spalted crotch applewood, but still works.

Thanks for the reply ejames. I had been kind of keeping a sideways eye out for one of his tampers, and when I saw the tamper that you made in this thread (I can't figure out how to quote already-posted pics) ( http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/the-prettist-poker-and-tamper-ive-ever-seen ) I actually thought that you might be him. Doesn't seem like that is the case, and I don't think he is doing it anymore because he used to have his own website, but that tamper that you made is a pretty good example of something that he could have made just based on shape, proportions, materials, level of finish. Yours is even better!

Beautiful work by Mr. James. Glad for this thread as I didn't recall the other one, wherein this image resides:

And here's how to do photos:
Once your photos are on a photo hosting site (such as Imgur.com; Photobucket; Dropbox, etc.), select the full image, then Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) and choose copy image location. Now paste that URL (the full web address) into the box that pops up under IMG in the compose reply window of the thread in which you want the photo to show.
