I stay away from tea, other than this for now, since tea is acidic. For those sensitive, tea can irritate the mouth and tongue when pipe smoking.

Problem with drinking a hot beverage during a smoke is, it cools. During spring and fall, I like a large mug of my favorite black tea with a smoke. But usually they are cold by the time I'm done. And I rarely smoke once sun goes down.

Hey mate that's fixable......get yourself a teapot and a tea cosy. Those tea costs do a darn good job. And get yourself possibly a smaller mug. My tea usually lasts for an hour or so with a bowl.

I love Yerba Mate…

Of course mate is a hot drink, but it is prepared at a temperature that does not harm the mouth, nor of course the esophagus. Since I usually drink it at home, I do it at the correct temperature. Sometimes I prepare it for traveling when I go with my wife who makes it while I drive, then I might heat it a little more. In places like Uruguay, where people leave home for work, mate in hand and thermos under arm, and drink it on the way on public transportation, that is how common mate is in Uruguay, it is likely that the water is overheated so that it lasts at the right temperature and the first mates are drunk a little hotter. Cold mate is called Tereré, a Guarani word, and it is typical of northern Argentina and Paraguay.

It is my understanding making traditional mate, is putting the loose leaves in a gourd, pouring in the hot water, let it steep inside the gourd, and then use a metal straw placed inside the gourd to drink from.

I was joking with her, because you showed me a western office working person’s cup, instead of a traditional gourd you were drinking from, and she laughed. Then she showed me she was drinking Yerba Mate at work, with her traditional gourd, and I was like, see you have a traditional gourd and we laughed.

What a small world, I talk with you and a few days later, seriously a Food Truck with a couple from Argentina selling Argentina style of food in Hawaii, I would of never thought LOL
