It is a natural part of smoking a pipe correctly. I put tobacco in and tamp it down to the correct depth and then take a small draw on the pipe to see that I have the correct draw on the pipe. Then I put in some more and repeat the drawing on the pipe. Sometimes I need to do it a third time to properly fill the bowl. For me taking a small draw on the pipe is protection from overpacking the pipe.
I started codger scoping recently as I’ve been more impatient to pack my pipe carefully. It used to turn awful when I would do this in the past but now I guess I know what to look/feel for.

Once I know a blend/pipe, I load it and smoke it. It took a while to get the hang of it loading for good effect, but now I’ve found it’s more about the prep and dryness ahead of putting it in the pipe.
I usually spend no more than 5 seconds packing the pipe but I've smoked thousands of bowls. If you smoke enough it'll likely get like that for you too. The pipe for me is more of a habit than a ritual.
