Do you remember reading Sunday comics? I found them to be a very nice way to start my Sunday as a child and young adult. I do not have a local newspaper subscription and am uncertain if Sunday comics are still published. The Born Loser, King Arthur and Jolly Jim Piper were my favorites.

Gary Larson actually started (very) occasionally posting new comics on line. Berkeley Breathed brought back Bloom County, my favorite, on his Facebook page.

Waterson remains retired from publishing Calvin and Hobbes, but I'm sure some folks here have opinions about whether or not he owes his audience the sale of the the IP or to train an apprentice...?

I preferred the serials like Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, The Phantom, Brenda Starr, Gil Thorpe. Always hated Cathy, For Better or Worse, The Boondocks, Doonesbury.
The Far side was right up my alley with the absurdist humor, and Calvin and Hobbes was excellent. Enjoyed Dilbert, and loved Robotman before it morphed into Monty.
Several comics were exclusive to the Sun Times, and we got delivery of the Tribune, so I missed big portions of Sun Times stories, as I only occasionally picked it up on days I commuted to college.

Great way to follow along, though some strips like Dick Tracy have a HUGE amount of these omnibus (I believe they’re approaching volume 30!). Nicely collected in hardcover though, and they contain two full stories (or a few months of strips) Neat to see the progression of a strip, how art changes, influences of different writers etc.

I still get the Sunday news paper delivered. While antiquated, and on life support, I enjoy reading certain sections, i.e., Sports, Life, etc., even though it’s easier to read the same articles on-line. A few Sundays ago my kid asked me, “what are these…?,” referring to the colorful section of cartoons. I said, “The funnies”. Looking at me as if I had two heads I proceeded to read a few of them, and wow, they weren’t funny. We still laugh… not because of the content, but the silliness of reading them out loud. It seems that most are desensitized by wholesome humor, but it’s still nice to have those memories…

I was going to say one of the few comics I really loved was the Far Side. When I was a wee tyke seeing that and seeing it more importantly being popular gave me a clear sense that I might someday be successful as a comedian. It showed me that there are many people out there as warped and tweaked as I am.
Waterson has done a few little things over the years. Including taking over someone elses comic for a short period. The results are findable and as awesome as one would expect. Yes I am going to make you do the search if you want to find it.

What do you like? Funky Winkerbean? Mark Trail? Crankshaft? Or did my dismissal of Cathy rub you wrong??
hey Mark Trail is awesome. But you have to know how to read it. One you have to understand that Mark is a hyper prolific poacher himself and just wants to get rid of his competitors and also when they have the dialog bubble in a random nature scene it's the animal talking. Try it out that way, much much better.

Hey as long as it's not Prince Valiant or Mary Worth.
? Mary Worth.... a daytime soap opera in comic form. (That was a Sun Times strip here in Chi town, so I didn’t see it much until I went to college and would pick up the SunTimes to occupy my time on the Metra).
Trib had Gil Thorpe (exclusively in the Sports section), then with the comics they had Brenda Starr, Little Orphan Annie, the Phantom, Dick Tracy, Cathy, Hi and Lois, Gasoline Alley, Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Broomhilda, Hagar the Horrible, Peanuts, Dilbert, For Better or Worse, Beetle Bailey, Mother Goose and Grim, and the Lockhorns.
