Chasing Embers just told me how to fix this and it worked out great. I heated the stem very carefully with a hair dryer, and pushed the threads into the stem just a tiny bit. So little that I didn't even know it moved. You can also buy new threads.

The one on your pipe appears fine. You just need to screw it back into the pipe and continue turning the stem clockwise to align it. Your photo of the stem has both inserts where the threads should remain in the pipe.Thanks for the help. I'll order some now.
