@jjtroutbum - to add people search under the members button at the top of your screen, you can add from there (it's next to notifications)
As for security Kevin is right if your worried just don't fill in the box, or only put your first name & location. It's not really something that needs additional coding. It's a very valid point about sharing too much but there is no real harm in with holding your surname from the community here as I can't really think of a reason they would want/need it.
