I am still new to this whole endeavor as well, and I started off with all bents. Last month I was in a local B&M and they had a nice grained straight billiard basket pipe on clearance for $20 so I picked it up. It has easily become one of my favorites and it's nice and lightweight which is good since I am a clencher as well. I have to be able to move around when in my shop smoking, so unless I'm sitting on the porch reading with a glass of scotch, I have to have mobility. Pick up a cheap one you like the look of and see what happens. Worst case, you don't like it and then stop spending time thinking about it and can focus on what you do like. Cheers!

I only smoke straights, but started with bents. I'm not 100% sure why I've ended up a straight pipe smoker, but there are a few things that come to mind. I like the fact that they are more out of my way as a clencher. They never hit my chest or shoulder when driving or laying on the couch. I think the biggest thing is engineering? It's two pieces with a straight line drilled through them. This works for me. I smoke straights under 30 grams that are group 2 or 3 in size. I like my chambers 17-19.5mm wide and 1.5in deep in case I feel like smoking folded flakes. In addition, this size gives a 30-45 minute smoke, which is what works for me. It's all personal preference.

Well, my new (and first) straight pipe arrives tomorrow! I'm excited and will try and post a photo.

Who knows where it will lead in the long run, but I'm sure many more enjoyable smokes are headed my way.

Straight or little bit bent stem is my favorite pipes. Canadian, Bulldog, Poker, Apple and Billiard. I've bent pipes too and I use then when I take dog for walk or fishing. Fist pipes where bent ones then I got a straight Chacom Billiard and since that day straight ones have been closer to my heart.

I have a mix of both straight and bent pipes. For me, bent pipes are more comfortable to smoke but straight pipes tend to perform better. The normal moisture that collects in the airway while smoking has more surface area to absorb in a straight pipe typically. In a bent pipe, the moisture collects and travels back to the bottom of the tobacco chamber due to gravity causing bent pipes to gurgle more often than straight pipes. Of course, all of that can be mitigated if I'd pay better attention to my puffing and slow down.

Wayne, I recently bought one of your pipes from a guy here on the forum(ssjones). The pipe smokes brilliantly, cool and dry and whatever I put in it tastes great. Even bent as it is, a fluffy pipe cleaner passes with ease and has not gurgled even once in the many times I have smoked it. Thanks for making such a great pipe.

Peck, I was thinking the same thing...WTF?
When I first started smoking pipes I purchased all kinds of styles and shapes. Currently 90% of my pipes are straight. I have one Wiebe full bent and quite a few 1/4 bent. The pipes that are bent are 3 Ryan alden and the rest are Peterson's with those majority of shape 999.
