Here's the thing... and someone may have mentioned it before. If you remove a vulcanite stem while the pipe is still warm, sometimes when you go to put the stem back in it's too loose. Has to do with contracting when it cools. So, let the pipe cool off before removing the stem. puffy

I’d be worried about loose fitting stems, or stems that are too tight. I personally would never do this but if thats your thing, keep on keeping on. A military mount is probably the only pipe I would do this with no worry but I still keep those in one piece.
