Hi everyone, new member here and fairly new pipe smoker.
I know the consensus is to store your tobacco in mason jars but I was wondering what people thought of storing opened tins in a large sealed tupperware/sistema container, maybe with a boveda in it?
I don’t have much room to store jars and I like to have a bit of variety with my tobacco, have about 7 open tins at the moment. I was hoping the sealed container would keep them from drying out in the medium term (6 months) opening it daily.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers.

Where do you live/what climate do you live in and what blends are you talking about. Some have so much humectants in them that they'll stay moist even if you leave them in an open pile on your kitchen counter.

If you live in air conditioning and assuming you have a blend that's not chock full of glycol or propylene glycol, you'll probably have dried out tobacco in 2 to 3 weeks, let alone 6 months. But you can always rehydrate them even after 6 months to no real ill effects.

Good point mate and thanks for the reply.
I live in a sub tropical part of Australia, pretty humid in summer but fairly dry in winter.
And the blends I have are English, Va and VaPer from Dunhill/Peterson, Samuel Gawith, Davidoff, Cornell & Diehl and Mac Baren. I can be more specific if needed.

I don't know about Davidoff and Mac Baren, but I suspect the others may be susceptible to drying out. The Boveda will help but I'd personally look for some old jam jars to put them in. Does Vegemite come in jars? ;)

Or find yourself one of these airtight containers to out your tins in: 1800 Weatherproof Protective Case – Small - https://www.harborfreight.com/1800-weatherproof-protective-case-small-64550.html

Thanks for the advice guys.
I think I might have to get some jars. I might even do an experiment and do half jars and half in the tupperware. The tupperware container is quite similar to the case in the link you posted mingc, it has the clips and the rubber seal. Also, vegemite does come in jars but I think I’d go through 7 tins of baccy a lot quicker than 7 jars of vegemite, that shit is potent! ;)

Wow, I would sure go with the 4oz jars. I have them stacked all over the office shelves. I wouldn't want to blend all my tobacco's together over time in a box even though I have boxes of cigars in tupperware like containers with multiple blends.

Ah, there was a cultural misunderstanding then. Tupperware in the USA is something less robust, with a friction fit lid.

Ha! I've never had Vegemite but I grew up in Malaysia where the Brits sold us natives Marmite. I rather like it!

Welcome to the forum!

storing opened tins in a large sealed tupperware/sistema container
If I'm not mistaken, forum member @cigrmaster (or however you spell it) has been doing exactly this for years. Or so he claims, and even went so far as to doctor up some photos of it. I don't see any problems with it unless you smoke stinky tobaccos or want to have more than a few tins open at once. I have dozens and dozens going, so I just use 4 oz. Bell/Kerr jars.

Everything I've ever read about storing pipe tobacco tins in a humidor has been emphatically against the idea. However, I've done so for long periods of time and it worked great. I run my igloodors at 70%. I still keep the tin closed with the plastic top it comes with, but inside the igloodor.

I have approximately thirty open tins. I'm preparing to buy a large (I can't recall if it was 30 or 80 liter) airtight storage container from Amazon. I'll put all my tins within with a few sources of humidity. I like leaving them in the tins. I'm already doing this with smaller containers that aren't exactly airtight.
