So you're saying I need to buy more tobacco?

This is a bummer - when I read news of the acquisition earlier this year, I did not get a warm tingly feeling in my tummy.

I am going to be hella pissed if Virginia Slices go away.

And, yeah, I get that some folks have an ingrained cultural mistrust and dislike for the green stuff...conflating its increasing social acceptance with a shrinking pipe tobacco market requires some pretty wild logic.

It will be interesting to see what the new 'portfolio' contains - until then, I guess this thread can serve as good fuel for the ever present panic-buying cohort (to which I sometimes belong!).

1. Yes! 2. I work for Mac Baren, which is owned by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

Oh nice, well do tell…

There are many pipe professionals here as members, many of them we know. So please share a little about you.

Mac Baren is one of the great icons in the pipe world. I’m sure many would love hearing a bit about your work and stories at Mac Baren. :)

All my apologies but i am freaking out and cant read all of this. Can someone just please tell me the HH line is not going away?
I've sent out some emails to a few different companies, including the big dog itself, inquiring about the situation. From what I can tell, it sounds like operations are to be merged and the lines will be pared down to increase efficiency/reduce redundancy/blahblahblah. If that's true and they're keeping some, I highly doubt they would get rid of popular options like the HH line.

This is just my conclusion from the somewhat cryptic replies I received, so take that as you will.

We're not even at the point where we are learning about brand and product changes. The factory in Denmark is closing and being consolidated over the course of 2025. No timetable for closing US operations have been announced.

Relax. And resume panic buying as per usual. I bought a couple pounds of Sutliff blending tobacco as a hedge. A pound and a half of HH Old Dark Fired, and it will have to do. If it goes, it goes.

Even if not, it for sure probably won't be the same.

That's sort of the thing, whether or not any given blend will change is going to depend on what is in it. If components or ingredients in it now aren't something STG uses or wants to buy, the component or ingredient will be changed to something else.

If Blend X uses tobacco from Farm A and STG doesn't stock tobacco from Farm A and doesn't want to pick up buying tobacco from Farm A, they'll change it. If Blend B uses Flavor C as a casing and STG doesn't have or want to buy Flavor C, that'll be changed. If Blend C uses Ingredient Y and STG carries Ingredient Y, then that won't be changed.

That's the problem with "streamlining"... it homogenizes everything. Two blends very similar? One will be dropped or if the name is valuable enough, both will be kept but just made the same with two different names.

Diversifying portfolio without making changes means also diversifying vendors, and diversifying intake is inefficient and contrary to the STG model of "reducing inefficiency"... big corporate thinking here goes basically "why buy 10 lbs each of A, B and C at $100 each ($300 at $10 per unit) when I can just buy 30 lbs of just A at a better pricing for $250 ($250 total, $8.33 per unit)?"

@georged is an older respected member, my hat tips to him. As an older and respected member, I never tangle with him.

Because he’s highly intelligent, and a fast typer too on the laptop.

I even watched him once give a guy a Kung Fu flip…

Achtung: Mc Barens HH line is only for export and not sold in Denmark domestic market
