Just standing back and looking at the big picture.

People were driven away from tobacco by health fear arguments (at every level from personal decision making to federal law making), but the organizations and campaigns pushing those arguments were doing it for the money, not health reasons... or else there would be the same pushback on cannabis.

Except there isn't.

Exactly the opposite, in fact.

a.k.a. Follow the money.

The reason for mentioning it in this thread is A) the STG situation is a byproduct of that ^^^; and B) as a reminder STG will do whatever makes them the most short-term money, long-term customer satisfaction be damned.
I don't think that the motives for regulating the cigarette business were quite so uniformly monochromatic. Cigarettes are unhealthy and have contributed to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, probably more. The government eventually recognized that, despite the hundreds of millions of dollars lavished on elected officials and bureaucrats, and took regulatory action to reduce the number of smokers.

The pot business deregulation is certainly motivated by money, top to bottom, and nothing else.

Only weird if you see the world through a paper towel cardboard tube, telescope-style.
We’re on a forum about pipe tobacco and once again when there’s any negative news regarding the industry someone, in this case you, decides to bring up cannabis legalization. It’s a pretty old whataboutism tbh.

In regard to this specific thread, this issue is all about consolidation of the industry and in no way shape or form does cannabis play a part in that. Yet regardless, you wanted to bring it up. SMH lol

Do they use mostly STG bases? I don't know much about C&D.
They are a proper manufacturer who source their own raw leaf for production. I think this news now makes them the last US based pipe tobacco producer? At least any major one, I think the company that bought D&R a few years back might still produce those blends in the US but after the sale I stopped buying once they canceled a bunch and other changed for the worse.

I’ve never heard of C&D doing anything with STG.

This is what it says on their site;

Our head blender Jeremy Reeves works closely with farmers and tobacco merchants around the globe to personally source each of the unique varietals and grades used in our blends: From matured Bright and Red flue-cured leaf to exotic Kasturi and sustainable Turkish Latakia, each is specifically selected for consistency and quality.

I wonder if this will open opportunity for C&D to provide components for the small shops who blend depending on how that side of Sutliff is impacted.
That is a silver lining if I've ever seen one, and an astute point. I'm assuming you're only referring to American tobacconists.

One of the biggest shames from all of this is that Sutliff makes match blends of many venerated, discontinued blends. Some of those older blends that have been discontinued, but kept alive in one way or another through Sutliff's match-blends, might actually be dead if Sutliff closes up shop.

It’s weird that cannabis is being brought up in this conversation tbh. I understand that some folks don’t like the plant but this ain’t the forum to piss and moan about its legalization.

@georged is an older respected member, my hat tips to him. As an older and respected member, I never tangle with him.

Because he’s highly intelligent, and a fast typer too on the laptop.

I even watched him once give a guy a Kung Fu flip…
