Hey guys... So the news is out. STG will be completely closing the production facilities of Mac Baren in Denmark and Sutliff. There also have been tough decisions made about the STG/Mac Baren/Sutliff Portfolio which I'm not at liberty to write about. So I'll only post what is publicly available at the moment. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts! We love y'all pipe smokers

Translated from the Danish MSN news site: MSN - https://www.msn.com/da-dk/nyheder/other/nu-er-der-kommet-afklaring-fabrik-med-200-medarbejdere-lukker/ar-AA1tyKlr?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaZ_oQiU2voTRuKNEnq9lERYixOj2Eqru4548pTsb4tVmp_eBYcxhNhwoFs_aem_UhUiE7qKfLCl57hs7HX7Gg

Now there has been clarification: Factory with 200 employees is closing

In recent months, there has been great uncertainty among the employees at the Mac Baren tobacco factory in Svendborg.

The fate of the factory has been unclear, but now it has been clarified.

After the Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) has acquired Mac Baren, it is clear that the factory in Svendborg will be closed by the beginning of 2027 at the latest.

For the employees, however, it still leaves more questions than answers.

According to STG's director, Niels Frederiksen, it is hoped to be able to move some of the approximately 200 employees from Svendborg to STG's factory in Assens.

This is what TV 2 Fyn writes on the basis of Fyns Amts Avis' story about the factory in Svendborg closing down and switching off.

However, how many there will be is yet to be seen.

"At present, we cannot say anything about how many employees will be moved," says Niels Frederiksen.

He emphasizes, however, that they will do their best to help the employees who cannot continue at STG to find new job opportunities.

A necessary decision

The acquisition of Mac Baren, which cost STG DKK 535 million, is part of the company's strategy to acquire and streamline companies.

Niels Frederiksen explains that although closing the factory is not an easy decision, it is necessary in order to achieve greater efficiency in production and sales.

The decision about the closure was presented to the employees on Tuesday, and the reception was marked by disappointment – but also some relief at finally having a clarification.

Uncertainty has been heavy since STG announced the acquisition in June, and the future of the employees in particular has been a major topic of conversation at the factory.

The first consequence of the acquisition will be the dismissal of the management team, which will take place within the next eight to ten days. However, it is not only the factory in Svendborg that is affected by STG's new strategy. Mac Baren facilities in the US will also be closed as part of the restructuring.

For many employees, it is still unknown what the future will bring, but STG's ambition is to support the affected employees as best as possible in the transition to new jobs or perhaps even a new everyday life in Assens.

I'm not sure what anyone would care about the workers... will they just be wiping out their blends altogether?

See, everyone was saying that it would be politics that killed pipesmoking. When in reality it would be the petty penny pinching of the worst pipe tobacco company in the world.

At least we will still have C&D.
I keep saying it's the market that's what we have to worry about.

They're closing one of their factories. Mac Baren will still be produced in Assens. Right?
Hopefully. It sounds like at least some of the lines will be discontinued.

Moving production to a new facility means different equipment, tobacco sourcing, techniques, QC, etc. etc. While by no means a certainty, there’s a solid possibility the blends will noticeably change. I hope not, but definitely possible

I'd like to get some clarification about closing Mac Baren facilities in the US. Does that mean TobaccoPipes will be closed?
Assuming all related companies came with the purchase, they would have gotten Tobaccopipes and cupojoes. Both were being operated out of Sutliff once Sutliff bought those retail sites out a few years back.

I also wonder the impacts to independent tobacco shops across the US who use their blending components. There's a lot of tentacles.
