I have that tool. It is also precarious to adjust, so I always adjusted the width of the cut a tad too large and worked my way to the needed width in steps. Otherwise, if you try to adjust it to the perfect width for the first swipe, you can easily overshoot the size and end up with a worthless stem.The new stem is a Churchwarden, so it won't fit in a vice for a lathe. I don't think I can get the shank in a vice either. It's curved. I don't know that I would trust "freehand" drilling. Looks like the the $80 adjustable turning tool is the solution. Seems like a lot to pay for a one-off usage.
