I say, bust buy 3 - 4 MM cobs while getting up to speed. They are cheap, smoke great and you can save up for pipes you may like better.

A very good strategy. Experience teaches the best.

As others have said, buy pipes you really like one at a time rather than focusing on having an instant collection with pipes you may not want. 4 or 5 pipes right now will do you just fine.
