I’m surprised I like this show. This is the only new TV show I like these days and the only recent ST I’ve liked. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to non-Trekkies. It’s definitely a bit of nostalgia for me - I mean the story-writing style. That’s what makes it enjoyable as a fan of TOS, and some of the later ones. Anyway, anyone else enjoying this one? The elements of ST are probably rather clear though I won’t try to spell them out. Maybe someone else wants to? It’s something that really distinguishes it from other fare. It’s SF with very little fantasy sprinkled in.

I'll have to check it out. DS9 is by far my favorite Trek and Voyager was ok but I grew a bit tired of it and have 2 seasons left. I watched 1 episode of Picard and that was decent/slightly different from other Trek series but didn't hook me.
Strange New Worlds is a return to form, IMO. It's more like what classic ST is all about but it's a little scarier at times and it's modern. But the principle of it harks back to classic Trek. I'm just on the end of the first season and there are some clunker episodes but the good ones are really good.
It's not too bad. I'll likely watch it in full.

I tried watching Picard but couldn't get into it. And same for Discovery. But, I thought SNW was done well, from what I've seen. And the new season has been pretty good too.

What bugs me in everything from Discovery and the 2009 film onwards.
The battles are always in clouds, or nebula. Never in the blackness of space. With lensflare, and weapons firing everywhere.
I don't know whats going on anymore.
And when did the Enterprise D become so agile? That annoyed me.
If the producers ever did a war film, the aircraft carriers I expect will be wizzing about like jetskis.
And the 16 inch guns of the Iowa class will be firing at 200 rounds a minute. All at point blank range, in a thick cloud.

I like the show as well. It's very well made, good casting, more complexity without losing the Star Trek feel.
That's kind of the point on several levels. With a lot of textures on the screen, you unlikely to notice individual flaws in the VFX, cheats, scale problems, etc, etc. At a different level is the idea to recreate the feeling of being in a battle where you don't have the time or the luxury to study the situation, only time to immediately respond to an onslaught. It's an attempt ot make the audience feel the "fog of war".
It tries. They did a show based on Ursula Le Guin’s The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. I can’t say it was a successful episode but A for effort. They try.
Ok... best I just check it out. One of the many things interesting about Star Trek, aside from the socialism aspect of human society as portrayed in all the shows, is the fact that it seems to draw viewers from a wide range of age groups. Some were introduced with the original, others TNG, and probably a lot of gen-z and millennials with the newer series. I do wish some brain erasing technology would come out so I could watch the Dominion War again with new eyes.
Mentioning this for no other reason than now you can say you know somebody (electronically, anyway) who saw the original three broadcast seasons in 1966-67, but never more than that. None of the subsequent TV series or movies.
But---as in, what are the odds of this for a non-trekkie?---I then did the full-on Star Trek Experience "thing" (museum, dinner, & movie-set "ride") at the Las Vegas Hilton back in 2002, so can say I've met both a Vulcan warrior and a Ferengi face-to-face (they never broke character).

A lot of TV, or most, is just too wacky for me. It has a millennial or post-millennial sensibility maybe. I didn’t like Picard but I only watched 10 minutes of it. I feel like 10 minutes is enough for me to decide. Sometimes I’ll go back and try again.
I pretty much agree and do the same although the first episode of most shows kinda blows. Have you checked out the new Perry Mason? I was pleasantly surprised by it. It is very un-millennial.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as the new Perry Mason. I’ll search it out.
I watched the original Perry Mason when it was on and I have read many of the Erle Stanley Gardner books.
I tried watching the new Perry Mason but couldn't get past the first episode because of the way it portrayed Perry Mason.
I can understand that if you have an emotional or whatever type of attachment to the original show as he certainly is a sad depressive sack in the new one.
