We also have a few of the John Cotton's Cotton Johns (the only all-cotton toilet). This was really one of my better ideas. Unfortunately it didn't fare too well in the big-box home improvement stores so we're blowing them out, so to speak. What we have left are mostly returns, so they are a bit soggy. You pay shipping.

All that said, War Horse, all of the War Horses, are on my list of favorite tobaccos, despite...

So apparently they won you over, eh? Lol.
I went from a a strong dislike to a like after the toppings dissipated some but I wouldn't put them up there with my favorites.

I just went through and read all those older posts from MLC and what an entertaining read it was... I wish we had those kind of lively debates today. He sure is a passionate man and I respect the hell out of him!

Actually MLC has been pretty quiet recently. Eric sees him occasionally for a beer and I was so busy this season I forgot to send him a Christmas card. I assume he likes the stuff or he would have found a way of making his displeasure known. I'll ask Eric what gives in MLC world.

Troy has been banned from this forum but he is very active in another forum that I frequent and he is just as prolific as ever. I won't mention the forum publicly cause it's not my place to do so but if you're interested you can PM and I'll tell you the other forum I frequent. Troy is essential to our pipe community.

I miss Troy and his vast knowledge of piping history which was shared with us all here. I have never fully understood exactly why he left us...by all accounts he wasn't booted off as Hawky suggests above.
Having read his thoughts of the then unreleased War Horse bars (several times) I would love to know what he thinks of the current, final product versions.
Regards,
Jay.

There is Tonquin present which is used in many parts of the world as a vanilla substitute.
So, while there is no actual vanilla, the scent and flavor are present.
Thanks, cobguy. Vanilla flavoring = something that tastes like vanilla.
And too much of it, but I do kind of enjoy the roasted marshmallow room note!

Yes he was. It's very unfortunate, but he acted out in a major way that couldn't be ignored at the time. For me, as a lover of the history of pipes and tobaccos who looked forward to his posts and admired his scholarship and passion, the loss was horrible, but he thoroughly earned the banning.

I didn't miss that one, and it wasn't pretty. Jesse (sb) hit the nail squarely. A big loss to all concerned. Hope Troy is doing well, and happy.

Apologies then folks. I thought I had read somewhere that he had left the group in disgust, also, I was of the impression that once a member had been 'booted off' his name became 'anonymous' on any forum posts which his have not (though heaps of his posted images are 'missing').
Either way, his absence and his wisdom is deeply missed.
Regards,
Jay.

MLC & his posts were the reason I joined this forum. I was perusing this site one evening & came across one of his beautifully done posts, concerning old English tobacconists. Wanting to see & know more, I took the trouble to sign up. No small feat for me as I hate computers & the like. Sorely missed. Glad to hear he's still posting, albeit somewhere else. Happy new year MLC!

Just received my first couple tins of this majestic bar.

I popped a tin and shoved my nose into it..

Whoa.

Sweet, pungent, leather.. it transported me back to the 17th century somehow. I picked it up and it reminded me of those Little Debbie brownies. Almost took a bite, but my better judgement returned. Popped it into a jar to hang out there over night.
This morning I removed the lid and breathed in the luscious aroma once more. I sliced off a corner and roughly rubbed it out. It will soon take residence in a pipe..looking forward to this one.

Well this is nice. Silky smooth, savory sweet. I can see what the fuss is about. Also, I could feel it after about 10 puffs. Impressive.

You're not wrong. This is usually what happens. This didn't happen with regards to Troy. Which is puzzling (or not) depending on how one interprets why the administration would leave a name, and avatar, as searchable tools for the forum even though the person who posted that information had been banned (however earned).
As to the original post and the discussion of "vanilla" or not... I have yet to try War Horse Bar, but am a fairly accomplished taster. I can say this, vanilla is an interesting aroma and vanilla-like substitutes abound. Vanilla doesn't actually have to be an ingredient for your brain to think that vanilla is present in a blend, or product.
Aroma perception and memory are closely linked, and both are mean bitches. If someone grew up their entire life knowing vanillin as "vanilla" what would they think the first time they stripped open a vanilla bean from Madagascar and smelled that essence? What if they then did the same with one from India? What if they had Vanilla bean extract from the same Madagascar bean in two brown glass bottles, and a third bottle with Vanilla bean extract from an Indian bean? Would that person be able to match the two bottles that are the same? What if, then both of those extracts were combined with other aromatic elements in a blend of tobacco?
Is it possible to perceive what your brain interprets as vanilla when vanilla isn't present? You damn skippy.
Aroma perception is about access (how often does a person come across a flavour), practice (how often does a person actively nose and taste a flavour), and calibration (how often does a person actively noses and tastes a flavour in the presence of others who also practice tasting and then discusses the findings).
$0.05 in the bucket.
