Staining a Pipe 2/13/24

So I sanded this old estate pipe and stained it with Fiebings Medium Brown leather dye. As you can see, one side looks completely different. I've stained several pipes successfully so I'm not sure what I've done wrong. I tried using a more aggressive grit on the dull side then a wire brush and and buff before dying, along with a few different things but it always comes out like this.


If someone could let me know and also what to do to fix it I would appreciate it.

I would think grain orientation would come into play here - at least to a degree.

I tried sanding in the same direction. Or do you mean its just how the briar block was?

One side is duller than the other. Meaning that dull side is possibly soaking up different amount of dye? Finer grit sandpaper to polish it up? Just a possible educational guess, meaning I have no clue.

I used a finer grit to remove any rough spots. Maybe I shouldn't have. As far as soaking up more stain. Maybe I don't know either.

Wipe it off again. Apply a 2# cut shellac. Then wipe off all the shellac you can (alternatively, let the shellac dry and remove what you can with alcohol.) This will seal the different grain types and allow an even dye job.

I had the same dullness and fixed it with white diamond followed by red rouge on the buffer. Finished with carnuba.

Beautiful job. I was wondering if that would fix it. I dont have a buffer, carnauba wax, or white diamond yet but I will soon.

If you have micromesh pads, see if 12000 grit helps
