Just got this estate Peterson 314.My first Peterson. It had some pretty bad rim charring but is decent other than that.

As you can see, if sanded down the rim to remove the worst of the charring. My question is: do I now just need to apply some leather dye to the exposed briar on the rim? Or should I sand the whole stummel down to match before dying the whole thing?

You can just stain match it. Dark brown diluted with more alcohol will do it. If it’s too dark rub it with a little alcohol to take some off.
I like to lightly rub down the bowl with 000 steel wool to get the dirt off. Then I use MicroMesh on the whole wood surface before waxing. It. It smooths it nicely and makes the grain pop.

Definitely cut the dye with alcohol, a little goes a long way.

One comment I’d make is that before staining, you may want to knock down the sharp corner on the outer edge of rim left by topping the bowl.
Like the stain, a little goes a long way.

Thanks for that! At what point in the process you described would you apply stain? After micromesh and before waxing?

Great point about the edge.i added a slight bevel on the interior using a round spoon. I'm hesitant to touch the outer edge as I'm worried about my ability to keep it even all around. Any tips?
