I cooked these up the easy way:
20251019_193815.jpg

•Boiled for about 30 minutes in water seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper.

•Then into the oven at 400 with plenty of butter... cook until golden brown.

They were really tender this way, and the butter hid the gamey taste. This way is also a lot easier than frying, and you still get a crispy crust from the butter.

My dad and I always went squirrel hunting in the 1960s. My mom would make squirrel pot pie. Would give anything to be hunting with my dad just once more...
Yep.

Hunting and fishing was something I was drawn to as a young kid (paper route money bought me subscriptions to the "Big Three" outdoor magazines). Fishing was accessible enough (had a grandpa with a farm pond, other opportunities) but hunting had to wait until I was pretty much all grown - my dad didn't grow up doing either, too much time with all things farming, including livestock, as a kid and he told me he shot a rabbit once and just never wanted to shoot anything again - fair enough, but with no mentors or friends that hunted, no rifles or shotguns or handguns made it into my world until I was probably 30 or so. I've more than made up for lost time, lol.

That said, my dad finally had to give up golf - his best golf buddies both passed away last spring and his back/hips just won't allow it - that was something we shared since he first took me out at age 10 and we both miss that time together.

Okay, now my screen is all blurry for some reason . . . . Frank Cannon needs to put up some more sautéed game pics.

I used to squirrel hunt as a boy with a .22. We ate them, but I never really like the taste/texture.
I always laughed at "Cap. Andrew Luck" Twitter feed, he usually had a squirrel reference

This thread is inspiring. Just got a replacement stock for my Grandpa’s 1951 Remington 550-1 .22 and it fits perfectly! Going to clean the internals and now on the hunt for a classic 4X Weaver and side mount - will have to have a smith drill and tap the receiver - will hold off on final installation until I’ve made a decision on the scope - may just leave her as she is - the open sights are fine.

I have an old,now it's old😅 a Ruger 1022. I was thoroughly disappointed with open sight accuracy. I switched got standard velocity ammo. Made all the difference in the world for hunting those critters.

I have this same rifle and absolutely love it. For those not familiar, here is a link to an article on the weaponsman.com Website that gives its specifications, history, and some reviews for you to consider.

You are indeed blessed to be able to use and enjoy your grandfather's gun. Good luck with it!

I had one of those years back. That long barrel makes it real quiet with standard velocity ammo.

I wish I still had that gun... young men make some bad deals with old guns.
