Hi all.

I have been on a search for a Square shank bulldog like the one in the pic.
I don't know if Dunhill ever did one but can't make out the mark on the pipe clearly.
I keep my I eye on eBay, but if any one knows of a manufacturer please let me know.
Thank you for all your help.

The pic is not very clear, but judging by the size of that white dot (?) i don't think it's a dunhill. They do make square stem/shank though :

Thanks.

But i'm trying to find a square shank that's square on to bowl not the diamond shank orientation to the bowl.

Nice pipes though from your link.

Dunhill didn't make a square shank bulldog, at least not to my recollection. Some of the Quaint shapes have square shanks. The pipe in the picture is most likely a paneled billiard? The Quaints will be pricey should you find one.

Thanks.

I've got another pic looks like a bulldog rather than paneled billiard.

I'd say, yes it's a Bulldog, no it's not a Dunhill (I just checked the 1927, and 1938 catalogs). Beyond that, I've got nothing. Maybe an Italian pipe...?

:)

Rummage around among estate pipes. Meantime, save up to have such a pipe commissioned. I think there are some young up-and-coming carvers who would enjoy this challenge and not charge exalted prices. Personally, I think the "diamond" orientation of the shank on bulldogs is perfect; if they came squared up, I'd commission one at the more usual diagonal.

Can you really "size up" the dot from this photo? The whole pipe and hand are out of focus likely due to motion.
Even with the focus issue, it's large, assuming it's a dot. But even if it were, the position is wrong for a Dunhill and this is a square shank, not a diamond, as one can read the perspective of the planes in the second shot.
BTW, the photo in the OP isn't showing because it's on Photobucket. Sometimes the posted image shows momentarily, but once Photobucket's site becomes aware that it's being posted on a remote server, that's the end of it. You need to cough up $500 per year to Photobucket for the privilege of posting to remote servers, or you need to find a different image hosting site.
Dunhill did make square shanked pipes like the ODA 836 Square panel, but a bulldog, no.
Colossal Pipes and Ser Jacopo made a square shanked bulldog. Seems to be a pretty rare bird. Your best bet might be to have one made for you.

Thanks for your reply.

looks like I will have to get one made.
I've been trying to get a collection together of the pipes used in the Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) films.

Or as close as possible.

I got a 309 being sent to Peterson to have the 4ab stem put in and other pipes from the films.

just hard to find and see in the films trying to catch a good view of the pipes.
Thanks for all your help.

From what film is this? I would be very interested to try to see the rest of that shape. I was initially going to explain that we call that a diamond shank, but I see that you are aware. This really appears to be a square shanked bulldog. I've never seen one and I am curious how the shank transition and the chin are handled. Very interesting pipe.

It is from the 1944 film The Pearl of death with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Bruce is the one smoking the pipe.

From 8:25 to about 8:40 into the film and only short moments.

It looks like my Ashton....mine is bent but the dot is the same size and since it's black and white, maybe that's why the outer color shows white making it look larger. Just a thought.

Yeah, original appears to be straight, but slight variations aren't unheard of. Still digging, one may turn up.
