The American Indian lived in harmony with the land, Nature and animals. Out of this culture came a belief in animal spirit guides. Outside of this culture I'm not sure such an association with an animal guide is replicable.
Is it exclusive to Native American culture? Maybe I’m mistaken, but I thought similar concepts exist in Australian Aboriginal tribes as well as other peoples that have/had a similar “subsistence of the land” oriented culture. I’m not being a pedant, I’m genuinely asking. Any other peoples that have a similar notion?
I’m a bit of an anthropology nerd, but most of my studying has been in biological anthropology. The cultural/religious aspect, I know much less about.

I agree. My point is not so much the exclusivity of this belief/practice to the American Indian as it is that it is not possible in a soulless culture such as ours dedicated to greed.

I read the same bit on the house cat and the tiger; they share 95% of their gene base. If you watch big cats, you can see the similarities in behavior and anatomy. There's a gesture you can do with cats, a double eye blink, that they will return, if you do it in a slow, calm way. Lions, tigers, and cougar will also do this with people at the zoo etc. Between large and small cats there is a key observable difference besides the size of their prey. The big cats can roar, and the small ones purr. A big cat's roar can be heard for miles. All cats share a proportionately short digestive tract that can mostly only process protein food, unlike dogs, bears, and people, who eat a wide range of foods from plants as well as meat.
