I have a brother near Stuttgart who will be visiting in March. I'm looking for blends that really just aren't available in the US but he can get in Germany and bring me in March. Maybe only a few pounds worth.

I know a few sources that will ship to the US so that's not really what I'm looking for.

A source for some Motzek blends is a good example of what I'm after. If a website is available for me to peruse that would be ideal.

Here's Motzek's site:

Forget about Strang. The revival is a faint, very faint, reproduction of the original.

He would have to visit Munich to buy from Pheifen Huber and I would suggest Virginia Golden Flake.

Other stuff you can get from Esterval's (hopefully).

Choosing the blends isn't the issue. Finding a source is.

I can get HU and Synjeco shipped to me in the US. I can't find anyone who carries brands/blends like Motzek that will ship to the US.

There's some Motzek blends that sound good besides Strang.

I think member @karam has reviewed a few for us if I remember correctly.

I've got plenty of HU from Estervals along with Dan Tobac's Ascanian line from them.

SG St James plug is on my list but it looks like I can get it from from Synjeco.

Thank you very much for the links.

I know I'm on the right track when there isn't an English language option for the site. Luckily my niece is fluent in German and lives here in Vegas. I'll just buy her lunch and have her translate for me.

You can, they have almost all the SG plugs. If you haven’t already make sure you get some of their house ropes too (made by gawith). I’m not the biggest fan of the name brand gawith ropes, but the Synjeco branded ones are incredible. Clegir and Holker especially (straight va and vaper respectively).

But as far as your OP question, I’m afraid I’m useless 🤷‍♂️

I am smoking tobacco blends from Tom Darasz -the one that Motzek handed over his recipes - since April almost exclusively. I found all the blends on high levels reaching the heights of whatever high regarded older companies.

For me there are true gems 💎 available in Kiel, for example the Perique-Cake, 98BC07B8-DDF4-43A3-BB3E-00F5385441AD.jpeg
the Latakia blend Kieler Förde with 65 percentage Latakia or the P-Cones, C2BFEC34-368D-4874-945F-88FF158EA94D.jpegPerique and Virginias. This on reminds me a lot of Samuel Gawiths Springtime. SG blends are no longer available in Germany because of Brexit.

I also ordered a Motzek Curly Strang as it was fresh available. First it didn’t do anything for me. Now it’s getting older, drying out and ripening it reveals a very nice smoke, and it’s affordable.

I am shure Darasz knows how to do it right. It may not be the same, like no Shiraz can be the same as from the same field 20 years ago. I am not a big fan of the hype on tobaccos that are gone eg Balkan Sobranie etc. It’s easy to mystify a brand when it’s gone. Lets face it, if you’re getting a well done Shiraz it is still a Shiraz.
That Motzek Strang is still an outstanding Blend imho, and it’s a lot of fun to prepare it for the pipe. Foto above!

Pfeifen Huber tobacco online order to address in Germany! Prices OK compared to many other countries, but higher than what most of you pay per 50gr/100gr in the US. Not sure what the free import limit is for US customs.

shanez this is actually the $64 question. Bizarrely enough there is no written rule you can rely on when bringing pipe tobacco into the country. Cigars and cigarettes yes; pipe tobacco no. The Customs website suggests you contact the Customs office at your expected port of entry for clarification (CBP Customer Service - https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-53?language=en_US). How odd is that? How truly strange is the implication that import limits vary at the discretion of the port. Most agents have little idea what the limit is or how to determine it (weight? units? Ouija board?).

In practice I’ve never had problems bringing in up to a few pounds but be aware that there’s no clear guidance to rely on.

You can take a certain limit of tobacco if you’re travelling overseas. 100 grams you can bring to a lot countries. But to receive a packet of US-tobacco in Germany, there is no way. It’s just not allowed.

Within range of Stuttgart is this shop:

Vogel's

Address: Geislinger Str. 20, 73033 Göppingen, Germany

Very good shop. If there are things in particular you're looking for, give them a call or have your brother call ahead. They have one of the better selections I've found in Germany.

It's a nice afternoon drive from Stuttgart to there, with some great restaurants and beer gardens in the fields/forests to visit. Shouldn't be too hard to convince him to make the trip...

I also second Sable's recommendation from Munich. Well worth it for a unique blend that would become a unicorn if people had an easy way to access it.

The problem with the reissue of Motzek Strang, is that Darasz chose not to do it right. He was taught by Frau Motzek how to make it, having participated in the making of the final Motzek made batch of 2016. So he knows how to make it.

But instead he chose to alter it, to change its structure, to simplify it. He's cut out the variety of Burley in it for one thing, and it's lost a good portion of the savory herbal notes that were a hallmark of the blend. When you sliced through the old strang you discovered a complex of finely rolled leaf, thin ropes within the rope, it's still present in the current version, just a much simpler construction.

The new Strang is a good blend, on its own merits, but not a great one, like its predecessor. The new Motzek Darasz Strang is more "strangish" than strang, less depth and less complexity.

I think I can safely say that if Huber’s Virginia Golden Flake was easily accessible it wouldn’t be a unicorn.

But would you pay for the old version an amount of about 500 US-Dollars as I’ve seen in a tin auction recently?
