i like the tonka flavor a lot more than any vanilla blend I have tried
I can handle tonka better than the rose geranium. Tonka also imparts a nuttiness. But, even so, while smoking it, I am always little perplexed. It doesn’t have any sort of complimentary or tobacvoey flavor. It kind of sets off as it’s own thing when smoking it. Whereas, I can taste cherry, apricot, and even vanilla like flavors in straight tobaccos, even in mynown homegrown that I am 100% sure there are no outside casings. So, those make more sense to me. Those flavors can at a certain casing level, enhance the tobacco flavors.

But, some lakelands seem to just throw the kitchen sink at the leaf, without any regard for the flavors of the tobaccos. But, I’ve sorta trained my tastes to tolerate some of these off flavors because if the strength of the nicotine and complexity of the leaf flavors. It’s a trade off for me.

I wouldnt call myself a lakeland smoker, as much as someone who tries to smoke through them because of the strength.

Tonka pairs exceptionally well with the leaf used in 1792, I think it’s one of the best examples of a how a topping can compliment the tobacco, I just don’t think vanilla would do it justice, there’s something mysterious about the Tonquin Bean. A lot of folks think it overwhelms, I believe some are sensitive to it, tastes very mild in 1792 to me and I’m aware that a lot of people will disagree with me.

In reading reviews and discussing blends with my beloved pipe club, I think there are two soapy references. The most obvious is the rose geranium discussed here, and the other is a soapiness of some burleys used in traditional Danish aromatics, cherry, apricot, peach, etc…
The second is a feel on the tongue and a “chemical(?)” soap taste like from licking a bar of hand soap. I get that too sometimes. Its more rare for me. But, early on in my pipesmoking at the Pipe lounge, when aromatics came up, guys would say, “I hate aromatics, the leaf is substandard and tastes soapy.” Now, I know the leaf os not substandard, but when heavily topped with the goopy stuff, it does have a slight off putting taste at times. I wont mention that these are Lane and Sutliff traits, because giys hate when those two get criticized, but some MacBaren and Stokkebye aro blends taste slightly soapy to me too.

I also think of that second soapiness as more of what a candle that has just been blown out smells like, if you could taste that.

Very nicely put, first time I had 1792 I thought this is going straight to my top 5, and hasn't lost its spot still!
