I'm not gonna lie jmill208, that's the only good words I've heard yet. My wife hated me working there so she's ok with it. I worked long hours six days a week, so she's happy I'm home now. My father is yelling at me to find a job anywhere right now. My great father in law is treating me like I just drowned six babies. If I try forunemployment I'm a fucking bum in his eyes. I'm under a lot of stress and scrutiny right now. I feel awful for thinking of myself right now while thousands of our brothers and sisters have paid the ultimate price. I feel so alone right now
Your father and father-in-law need to grow the hell up and get a grip. These are not normal times. There's only so much that you get to control. File for unemployment while you look for something. Look for any positives you can. Attitude is everything when times are challenging.
Did your employer offer any idea when they might be rehiring?

Take the unemployment insurance and whatever else you can get. There is no shame in it. Use the time to be with your family and don't waste your life in despair. You didn't create the situation. Take the money. Establish a work out routine to keep your T levels up. When your relatives ask about it- smile and say you're on it. They love you but it's your private business.

My father displayed the same attitude when I was laid off a while back. He flatly stated that anyone who was in my situation was a loafer if they went on the dole. Out of respect, I didn't speak about it again to him -because it upset him so much. Remember: everyone besides working people are draining the system - you're just late to the game. We have been led to believe that we don't deserve help when we need it. Dad bought that BS hook line and sinker. Working people have been suckers supporting everyone else for decades. We all paid through the nose for years in case something exactly like this should happen. Unfortunately, when we need help, the social conditioning kicks in.

The super wealthy are getting bailed out all the time for faulty decisions and circumstances they themselves created. I think i read that they dumped $1.5 trillion into the stock market a couple weeks ago to prop it up. Poof! it got swallowed up in an afternoon's trading. The poor in this country are already on permanent programs, whatever the army of their cat lady handlers call it- Take the bag. You earned it. With respect, your attitude should be something like, " F*ck you, gimmie my money".

Pay no heed to your father in law or anybody else, except for your wife.
It's not his life nor his family and he does not have to bear the consequences of his judgements.

Apply for the unemployment, you've paid for it several times over with your taxes. You will simply be getting a little back of all the money you and your family paid into the system.
Assess your situation do what seems best and keep an eye out for opportunities.

Best of luck to you, you will manage this and be stronger for it!

Wonder what that hypocritical asshole did with his government handout a few weeks ago...

It sucks a lot. I’ve been there and may be again shortly. Don’t let it get you down. The vast majority of the country is happy to sit at home and collect a check right now. Sign up for yours so you have some breathing room, after all you’ve paid into it for all of these years.

But with everyone sitting home happy to collect a check, I bet work is available for a guy who gets out there and shows he’s willing and able.

Sorry to hear that you and your family are going through this. These are tough times for a lot of people, but it will end eventually.

Because it has taken up so much of the thread I will comment on it. There is no shame at all in taking unemployment while you need it, but I think you already know that.

But still, Who is actually sick? The cure has turned out to be worse than the disease.
You wanna know who's sick? Over 1,200,000 active cases in the US, right now. Over 72,000 people have died - in the US, alone. 25,000 new cases yesterday, in the US. 2,350 people died in our fair land yesterday.
COVID Cases in US.

I sympathize greatly with the O.P. I'm sorry that people who should be supporting him are not. But this is a major public health crisis, and we are not out of the woods, by a long shot.

There are awesome words of wisdom in this thread!

As for unemployment insurance, that's exactly what it is. Your employer (ultimately YOU) have paid these premiums for years. Would those giving you grief about taking unemployment benefits also opine that you shouldn't file car or property insurance claims either?

As many have said, take it and secure your household. Piss on the accusers. This is a good time to think & prepare for a new added skill or change.

I strongly echo your sentiment. I'm am always saddened and suspicious of the motives of those who downplay the scale and magnitude of this tragedy.

Seriously. Your naysayers can go pound sand. Discuss it with your wife, be sure that you and her are on the same page and keep her there. If your in-laws are anything like mine, they will try and tell your wife one thing behind your back and then another when you are there. There's no room in a marriage for that BS, so keep her close, take unemployment, and her dad can go soak his head.

Lovely soundbite, that phrase. So glib, and so wrong.

Tell that to the factory workers at Tyson and Springfield. Tell that to the grocery store workers who have died. Tell that to the ER and ICU nurses and doctors who have died. Tell that to the 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 people whose deaths were projected if nothing was done.

And reopening doesn't mean that we're out of the woods, as tempting as that thought is. A virus doesn't give a damn about one's impatience or emotional angst, or lack of mental toughness.

I'm going to hope for the best. But based on what's happened in places like Singapore and Hokkaido after getting impatient and reopening, I have no reason to expect any good to come from this.

I worked at a gym, so a lot of human contact. I'm hoping for cautious heads to prevail in my state.

Sorry to hear about your layoff cob guy. There are good unemployment benefits, as has been mentioned. Your father in law doesn't have to know, does he? If the job sucked, it may be a good thing. Hope so.

Now is a good time to work with carefully chosen family, colleagues and friends (online and by phone mostly) who know your work and other activities to make expansive notes on your work and all of your talents. The work places give us all a narrow idea of what we do well, to keep our salary affordable to them. Knowing the range of what you can do, and alternatives, will keep you ready when a job similar to your recent one, or another comes open. The economy will fight its way back into functionality, probably with a lot of concessions to public health, but of necessity to keep us sustainable. We can't all get sick, and we can't all hide in the workweek either, so we'll proceed carefully, but forward. Hearing others recommend your skills will raise your morale, a little anyway, until someone can fork over some wages. I took great pleasure, in the service, working with an electronic technician to write up a resume for a GE plant near his home town when he was getting out, and by God we bagged that one. Too many of us are so damned humble (which can be a good trait), and we need some bragging lessons.

Sorry sir, we absolutley diasagree. Yes if 100 people died that would still be a lot of people dead, and its still very sad. But 50,000 people die every year in pools.. so man look, call me an asshole, Throw big numbers out there. Just remember that all those number are up against a world population of 8 billion people, and U.S. population of 380 million.

The total deaths for march are higher in 2017 than they were this year.. jump all over me if you want. But please find something else to do other than help justify the loss of all these jobs..

The odds of those number prove that not me, not you, and not anyone you know has died or will die from the corona virus.
