Ever hear or read those guys talking about blends of baccy that so nicotine heavy they cannot be smoked on an emtpy stomache, by a beginner or while standing?
A flavour so intense and an aquired taste that no way a novice could not vommit or so strong that even Dave had to chuck it away as it was just unbearable and noone can handle it?
Yeah, well it's all bovine excrement. Too many noobies giving their opinions on something they aren't used to or simply don't like.
An example or two.
:Dunhill - Nightcap. Oohhh so much nicotine you will need to be seated and can only smoke at night after a meal because the flavour is so strong. Pfft, smoked it 5 times a day until the tin ran out and only got a mild buzz even on a full bowl in the morning.
Let's go for two, because this one is really really overhyped.
:Samuel Gawith - 1792!!!!!!!1111one!!onewonwon... Yep. Tonquin Tonquin TONQUIN. Okay, I'll be honest here, never tried anything 'tonquin' tasting in my life until last weak when my tin came. tatses kind of like vanilla, musky old leather. I love it. All the talk about it being 'the single stongest tinned baccy' out there. Really? I smoked a large bowl of it at my front door and enjoyed each moment of it and not once did I feel sick or puke from the imense tonquin flavour. I did get the hickups, my usual pre-nictotine high sign. But barely a buzz.
Now, the actual ones I do not ever hear being mentioned as strong but ARE actually strong. This story from a few motnhs back.
*Go to baccy shop in city, eyeball his selection, ask about random black tin of Samuel Gawith something something.
Samuel Gawith Black XX twist.
"A new one in this, twist baccy too, got it in for a regular customer who smokes ropes daily"
Guy also said the man who smokes it, smokes it in roll your own cigaretes lol..
Bought it, went to nearby pub for a pint with friend and an obvious pipe experience! Half way into both my pint and pipe.. I needed to slow down. This stuff was stronger than anything I had smoked previously. Got the spins and didn't relight pipe until about 20 min's later lol. Fine after, and all night of more bowls of it.
Anyway, smoked several types of twists since, including more tins of this one and nothing, even in the morning no buzz. Brown twists are generally the strongest baccys I would personally say exist.
So, let's hear your thoughts and experiences of completely over hyped tobacco!

Funny thing is, full strength blends can sharpen your taste for milder blends if you let them. After some Big 'n Burley or Tambolaka or whatever, a little GLP Westminster or even Old Dark Fired (hardly the mildest of blends) can take on a new resonance and reason, or that's been my experience. It's the compare and contrast aspect rather than just seeing if you can get the room spinning. Though sometimes that's kind of fun too.

Ok, I am an official nic sissy. 8O I can´t enjoy Dunhill tobaccos because of the mighty Lady N. Tried SG XX because it sounded so exotic. Well, it knocked me off my feet and I felt like passing out in a fast food stall (why the heck they put vegetable oil into this poison?). SG Lakeland? No Sir, can´t handle it...
Give me lot´s of Latakia but please spare me the big N...... 8O

It's like when I watch a guy smoke his first cigar at The Briary, and they leave to go to the restroom. And, a few minutes later we find them drenched in water and leaning against the wall the color of kryptonite.
I've also had a guy even older than me bring in a couple of oz of PS LTF and give it away, saying, "this stuff gives me the spins."
It's nicotine, very powerful stuff. If you aren't already acclimated to it from cigarettes or chaw, then approach with caution.

samon, I dare you to take a group 6 pipe and load it full of Peter Irish Flake first thing in the morning. Make sure you report back as to how it went.

I only smoke the strong blends in pipes with a 1" bore. The wider the bowl, the less you absorb, IMO. Like ring sizes on a cigar, the narrower the cigar, the stronger the nic hit is what I've found. Plus, the taste is so much more rich and flavorful with a wide bore. However, I do like my Condor Ina smaller pipe. I get those suntan lotion flavors to come out better.
Irish Flake, phhhht...

Cotton Bole Twist is the strongest Ive smoked. Its a little harsh on my throat though. I think its Nicotiana Rustica which is said to be the tobacco highest in nicotine content.

I don't turn green, get swimmy-headed, or feel sick from any of the "powerhose nicotine" blends either (former cigarette smoker). One of the first tinned blends I tried was nightcap, specifically because of all the reviews talking about how strong it was (back when I first quit the cigs). Turns out I really liked nightcap, but didn't really think it was all that strong in the nic department.
If you haven't tried them already, check out five brothers, jackknife plug and happy brown bogie. Jackknife tastes great and packs a punch, happy brown tastes slightly less great and packs slightly more punch. 5 brothers basically tastes like a RYO cigarette and is all punch, no taste. If you are like me these blends won't make your head spin, but they will give you that nice warm embrace of Lady N to satiate your desire for the chemical.
FYI: I keep a pouch of 5 bros in my toolbox at work specifically for bad days when I feel like exploding. Nothing to soothe the nerves like a corn cob full of nicotine filled power!

this thread gave me a chuckle. i've been a 1-can-a-day dipper for 30+ years, and i have never smoked anything that gave me the "spins". dip pretty much gives you that cast iron stomach you need in order to be adventurous with the stronger varieties of pipes and cigars.

If we are just talking over hyped tobacco and not nicotine, I am going to have to say Mississippi River. It didn't float my boat...
First time I smoked Peterson's Irish Flake however did live up to the hype. Never cared for the taste but the N was there. I lost 2 hours of my life man.

The Black XX Twist is an occasional fun indulgence, for certain values of the term "fun" that involve saying "wooooOOOOoooo!" while being collapsed in my easy chair. Think I'll have a bowl tonight.
