I look at SP all the time looking for a steal on pipes. The decrease in both used and new is glaring to my eye and I am curious as to why? I know some must be going to SP Europe but I don't think it is the only reason.
The amount of estate pipes has really taken a hit. At one time you could see 120 plus American artisan pipes and now you only see 120 or so pipes among all the entire countries put together.

When I look at new pipes, loads of artisan have no inventory. The factories are still putting out plenty, it is the artisan people who seem to have problems keeping inventories up. It could be many of the artisan makers are dealing direct to the consumer cutting the middlemen .
I have no explanations but just raised a question and are any of you guys seeing what I am or am I just dreaming this shit up? I do see quite a few just uglier than sin pipes sitting month after month and even year after year.

I have noticed it. I figured with all the inflation and gas prices, etc., when times are tight and all, their would be lots of pipes flooding the market. I was wrong.

I don’t know about the U.S but here in the U.K I think it has a lot to do with the war generation that we lost.

For the last twenty years I, occasionally, go to auctions that are mainly house clearances which are great when you need new crockery or cutlery. One thing I have noticed is the type of objects on offer has now changed. You always used to get faux bone handled cutlery sets, cups and saucers and full tea sets, copies of famous pictures like the “Haywain” and heavy brown furniture. In amongst all this there used to be ashtrays, pipes, tobacco jars and pipe racks in every style imaginable - I once saw one that was a mirror!

Nowadays you don’t seem to get much, if any, of that kind of thing; styles change and what once was is no more.

With the ever dwindling numbers of us it stands to reason that the pool of pipes will shrink up. Can you imagine being the last pipe smoker on the planet? Vilified by everyone but not giving a damn about it! ?

What is Sykes’ username? I couldn’t find his response.
There was a third thread which is the one that had his responses;

My mistake. I thought I had seen it in the December thread.

You should have been filing regardless over $600. That’s been an irs rule for some time.
Since at least 2008. But initially reporting was pretty loose with a stated threshold for filling out a 1099 at $20,000 and any internet derived income expected to be reported by people on some sort of honor system. People being people, if there's an unearned advantage they're going to take advantage of it. And they will bitch when they lose that unearned advantage.
In 2021 the IRS changed the threshold for reporting requiring a 1099 to $600. Online income was always supposed to be reported. People chose not to do so. Business platforms handling such income now report much more extensively due to the change in the threshold.

When the bank gives me $2 a year in interest, I report it on my taxes. I just had to provide proof of paid taxes on 2019 stock options because their automated system thought there was an inconsistency.

I like that systems across the country are finally getting to a point where I can just pay the appropriate sales tax and be done with it. It’s an easier world as far as I’m concerned.

There has also been a problem getting briar due to many reasons. The inflation (caused by many reasons) has forced some smaller makers to concentrate on making rent and gas so fewer artisan pipes are being made. Yes the government/IRS needing more money has caused a slowdown also.
Sykes did say that they had labor problems in the estate department due to Covid and the general labor shortages. Hopefully some of these issues will slowly be resolved.

I am interested that the last two small groups of pipes I sent in trade for store credit never appeared on line, though I was granted a modest return on both. I puzzled over what outlet they use to turn these back to cash. I guess they either sell them as basket pipes in the B&M store they have, or send them overseas where they may bring a little more. The new pipe inventory on Savinelli used to be vast. I haven't checked it lately. It used to run maybe 20 pages.
