Just wanted to get opinions on the matter, Haven't smoked in quite some time just to avoid exposing the kiddo to smoke. But wanted to hear some thoughts on the matter, I personally grew up with cigarette smoke around my entire life whether Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa were holding me and having or smoke or whether it was in another room. Looking back I surely wouldn't condone it now, but however this was cigarette smoke not pipes and cigars which don't contain half the junk in cigarettes.

Anyhow. I'm not looking for the green light on smoking while holding my infant, but wanted to hear some experiences and how long I should wait before exposing my children to my pipe smoke. Normal conditions I'd smoke in my study which is just the room adjacent to where my child is.

Please share your thoughts, Much thanks in advance!

No.
Not while holding an infant. Not only are you exposing them to the smoke but to the occasional hot ember flying up from the bowl. I have too many t-shirts with burn holes to risk burning an infant.

I have never had a problem smoking my pipe while around children when I'm outside. As a personal rule, I don't smoke inside because I don't want to risk the smell of burning pipe tobacco lingering in the house.

The thing in my opinion is that children are developing but are also resilient. I wouldn't do it myself. I also wouldn't get out the pitchforks if you do it. Though I'd still say not only is it not worth the risk, it's a risk put on the most helpless and vulnerable type of person.
Mostly I also think quantity is a big factor. If you're on a porch occasionally smoking around the child that's one thing, if you're fogging out a small room with the child in it day after day hour after hour, that's going to increase their chances of serious issues.
One thing too is even if you don't cause any long term issues, do you really want to increase the chances of the child having any kind of upper respiratory illness or infections? And even a smaller amount of smoke can increase their chances of getting acute and temporary respiratory illnesses. Irritants which smoke is can increase the chances of asthma developing. Also just the fact that it's an irritant just seems a little lightly mean to do to a baby who's already about as soft and sensitive as possible.
Not going to call cps if you do it. But in no way would I also wave it off and condone smoking around an infant. The risk isn't worth enjoying a pipe.
And maybe most importantly you smoke around the baby then you have lost the chance to use the pipe as an excuse to get a break spending some time alone on the porch or where ever with the pipe.

This topic comes up fairly often, but its been a while since the last.

My opinion, is only the parent can decide what the appropriate action is in this scenario.

My ex wife hid her cigarettes from our daughter till this year, daughters 12 now. But yet she will leave alcoholic drinks laying around, which i believe is much more harmful to a child, if they get into it.

I never hid it, and am very proud of being a smoker. I do not smoke inside my home at all. And never in the car when shes with me. But i will put my pipe out and let it air out a few minutes before picking her up. I'll smoke outside if shes near or next to me. Can't be worse than a campfire exposure.

Some will tell you to always keep them away from the smoke. And well.... okay. Lol

I'd err on the side of caution and not smoke in the house.

cigarette smoke not pipes and cigars which don't contain half the junk in cigarettes.
Tobacco releases known carcinogens when on fire. Cigars, cigarettes and pipes involve ignited tobacco. Do the math! Some cigarettes, usually those in white paper wrapping do, often, contain chemicals meant to make the cigarette burn when sitting in the ash tray. They're designed to improve sales. But, tobacco is tobacco, mostly benign until fire is applied.

I don't worry about it but I don't smoke inside so I don't figure there's much to worry about.
The only indoor smoking I do is in the garage with the garage door open, so it's basically outside.

I hope one day to have an office/study that I can smoke in. If so I'll have the vent fan installed and probably won't smoke if she's in the room.

It’s different times now, everybody had open fireplaces smoking out their house, candles, lanterns, and men with pipes in the olden days…. J R R Tolkien smoked pipes all day in his study, I would assume connected to the house😂…. (Of course many rural folk still burn a wood stove today, but they are mostly airtights)

In this day and age I’d go outside, but maybe if your study was well sealed and had a big window it’s not the end of the world, but less smoke on kids is certainly better.

I just don't smoke in the house or the family car...or my work truck if I have the kids as passengers. Otherwise I do smoke around them, on walks or doing yard work etc.

Looking back, I think when I had little babies I had the same general rules but I just smoked a little less anyway because I was spending my spare time cuddling with the little one.

Now if they came out with an aromatic that had that 'new baby smell' to go with the nostalgia of having a baby in the house...
