There is a new law in Great Britain that will make it illegal to purchase tobacco in any form if you were under 16 at the time of its passage. It's a complete tobacco ban that grandfathers in current smokers. It's set to go into effect in '27 I think when current 15 year olds turn 18.. They're calling it "Smoke Free Generation". If this isn't reversed at some point, the clock counting down to the end of tobacco in Great Britain will begin in earnest.

I know this is smoking related and also entangled with politics, but I ran this by ADMIN before posting it. Please be careful about obvious political rants. Danger, Will Robinson, Danger...

Nothing new here. Other such laws have already been enacted.

I'm of two minds about this. Smoking is an addiction and potentially harmful to one's health. Killing it off has benefits. Same goes for alcohol, which is now known to cause cancer, besides killing brain cells.

On the other hand, I'm not a believer in legislating morality. It rarely works with sapiens. Prohibition was a great success, especially for organized crime, right?

Enjoying a pipe is one of life's pleasures, one I'll enjoy until I can't. But that doesn't mean that I recommend it to others.

Well, Prohibition in the US lasted from 1920 to 1933,
Apples and oranges! Prohibition was directed at people absolutely enchanted with alcoholic beverages. The legislation we are writing about is addressing a generation not exposed to tobacco. Certainly no similarity with regard to prohibition, none at all.

Harmful to health... there is now good scientific data on how harmful.

357 420 participants

Note how one form of smoking increased mortality by 2x and another form only 1.09x over a 26 year time period.

Note how non-daily pipe smokers had *lower* mortality over those 26 years than non-smokers.

That study still misses the Radon exposure link. I did not know Radon exposure increases the risk compared to non-exposed smokers by a factor of 9 and was shocked when I read about it. It seems the increase in fine dust sub-micron particles in the air leads to Radon daughter alpha emitters attaching to those particles and entering the lungs (instead of just attaching to a rooms walls where they are harmless).
Next thing you have to know is that certain forms of smoking will increase particle numbers by a factor of 30, while others will not increase the number of particles in the air at all. Certain new forms of "smoking", allegedly containing no harmful substances, are proven to lead to even more alpha particle attachment. Now first studies are popping up indicating it could be the most risky form of smoking ever.

In the end it seems our anecdotal experience and gut feeling about the relatively lower risk of pipe smoking has sound scientific backings. Even Radon exposure itself might lead to higher risks than pipe smoking.

That is why I try to smoke my pipes with moderation and checked my home for Radon levels.

Sooner or later those misguides laws in the UK will be swept away once the new generation has turned to non-tobacco products (only form of "smoking" still accessible to them) and related health issues will be higher than in prior generations.

Why? Have I missed the logic behind your statement. I'm not grasping the "why" ... The connection between "non-tobacco" products and tobacco products.

They’ll be exposed to it. Everyone older than them will still be smoking. That’s like saying anyone under 21 doesn’t know what alcohol is.

I haven't seen that it's had a third reading or been officially enacted, has that happened? The terms have been well reported here and elsewhere since the first attempt to have it enacted last spring.

The article you cite is from last spring and it wasn't enacted, but came back to life in November.

The vaping provisions will come into effect as of June 1, 2025.

It will be illegal to sell to those born after Jan. 1, 2009 as of Jan. 1, 2027 but not illegal for those individuals to consume, I believe.

I thought it was a done deal, but I could be wrong. They were talking about it on CaneRodPiper's livestream chat yesterday.

Drug/alcohol prohibition never seems to work. I can't wait for 40 years time when a 58 year old has to provide id to buy a pack of ciggies.

"i'm sorry but you don't look 58 years old or over so i'm gonna have to see some id." 🧓😔

By the time that rolls around, you'll have to drive to the one shop in the country that still stocks them. The rest will be out of business.
