My daughter was 10 when I started smoking, and I smoked in the same room; not good but not horrible, and no health effects for her. But it did affect my cat, who began wheezing. Smoked outside, but never liked it. Smoked in the bathroom, and this worked for the cat but not me; breathing my own second-hand smoked hurried quitting.

Based on facts, her concerns aren't valid. However, she's a female so logic and facts don't mean squat. You don't need health advice, you need marital counseling. She's not worried about the children's health because based upon what you described, she's not stupid enough to believe that crap she's handing out. When women say "do it for the children" it really means "do it for me dumb ass". So you best sit down with her and have a heart to heart now or you should look up and record the number for the best divorce attorney in the area immediately.
Or, as an alternative, you might view your wife as your better half, your soul mate, and the one person on earth whose concerns you care about most, and whose maternal instincts are stronger than you can imagine, and who cares about her children more than herself. Like I said, your questions are being asked in the wrong place. Go have a heart to heart with your wife, and seek compromise - as you've obviously already done but do it continually.

I really love how we get so many heartfelt answers to questions that probably shouldn't be asked of this group, and definitely shouldn't expect sincere responses. Come into a cigar bar and ask that bunch this, and you'll get things like...

punch the kids in the face
punch your wife in the face
what do you want kids for?
let me see a picture of your wife... in a bikini... got any of her naked?

The Briary lounge would probably be less aggressive...

someone fucked you?
put the kids in the garage and then smoke in the house
or, someone would just ask a question that is more interesting, and everyone would change subjects

But, really, when you are teaching your kids to smoke, remember that the dangerous part is the lighter. I highly recommend getting them started with a Bic. When you drop a lit Bic, they just go out. So, there is little danger that they'll burn the house down. But, pipes and cigars are too much for a small tike. Get them started on camel unfiltered. But, you'll want to set there with them till they've finished the cigarette. You don't want them to get distracted and waste a bunch of smokes because they saw a rabbit in the yard, and forgot they were smoking. Or, if you don't have time for all of that, buy them some Copenhagen. But, I have never dipped, so maybe someone else can better help with that.

Thankfully, most pipe smokers are more civilised than to be anything but gentlemanly and sincere to heartfelt questions from fellow pipers in in their infancy ;)

I spent my entire childhood surrounded by cigarette, cigar and pipe tobaccos. My uncle Irving was the big pipe smoker and he was a doctor. My parents smoked in the car and barely cracked a window. I lived through it just fine and these kids today have to suck it up just like I did. My kids lived around cigars, cigarettes and pipes and they have shown no ill effects. Don't raise a generation of wusses who cannot deal with smoke. Tell them to suck it up.

Please stop smoking if you're really concerned about this.
This ?.

I’m always amazed seeing people worry about something like this while their kids dive into a sugar bar with a nice Coca Cola on the side.

Not that that’s your case OP, just to make it clear.

Life is about balance. And taking everything into consideration. I mean everything.

If you’re trying to eliminate all the risks, even those that aren’t even real, then don’t bother leaving the bed in the morning.

I quit my pipe years ago when my late wife quit a three pack a day cigarette habit. I quit out of pride in her accomplishment and in solidarity with her concern for her/our health. So some sacrifice between a couple and in a family is desirable in my mind. I appreciate your good intent. Some of your effort sounds a little programmatic. Brushing your teeth for your wife sounds cosmetic and a good thing, but I don't think it relates to the kids, and likewise with changing your clothes. Like many in my generation, I grew up with a full-time smoker, a pipe smoker in my case. I can't say what health problems might befall me, but I've made the three score and ten with a dividend so far. When the kids are small, it is especially important to limit their exposure to toxins; kids aren't little adults and can suffer more from asthma and other sensitivities, more so if they have other health problems. I'd guess your mood and contentment as the father in your household has considerable value, to you and your family. So consider your happiness and release of stress part of your assignment as well.

Are you serious man?
No no no. Always start them off with a filtered ciggie [I thought everyone knew that?]

When I smoked cigs and got a health warning on a new pack "Smoking can harm children" I'd mutter under my breath, "As if I'd waste my ciggies on kids. Sheesh. Let the little buggers buy their own smokes."

Before I changed insurance, I, as a single dad, was like, “don’t get too close to the edge of the porch.” “Don’t climb on that railing.”
Then when I picked up BCBS full coverage, I was all, “what are you thinking? Push the trampoline up next to the house if you are going to jump out of the second story window.”

+1 on the alone time probably being the problem.

I really don't see how smoke particles on your clothes could be a problem, particularly when you wash yourself and change your clothes as you are saying. Maybe try to find a way for her to have some off time as well and the problem may sort itself out.

Hey...... wait a minute, If I remember correctly weren't you the one who said if you could go back and do it over again you'd put down the pipe and cease smoking altogether and wouldn't recommend young guys to pick up the pipe?

Well God bless you for being a dad. Fatherhood is a big job and by all appearances you are taking it very seriously. Sounds like your wife is endeavoring to be a good mom as well. Just give it time and all will be well.
Children teach us that the simple things in life are the most satisfying. Which includes pipe smoking.

I believe there was a study in Canada some years ago which showed how particulates in the air from road construction caused a certain number, perhaps a few thousand deaths in Canada per year. Which seemed plausible until one realized that the same particulates from mining would cause over 100 million deaths per year (obviously a multiple of the entire population). One wonders if second hand smoke calculations are similar?

I thought this was what I recommended???

@Sloopjohnbee I’m pretty sure that’s a very oversimplified distortion of what I said. But, I’m not sure how it relates here.
Well, at the time if I remember correctly it was a post regarding health as they typically come up - and I understand it seems strange to bring it up here but with the insurance talk it crossed my mind - especially since the gentleman OP also had another thread regarding his unveiling smoking status to relatives

Neither of those thread topics sound interesting to me. It was most likely an “addiction” thread. I tend to post like that a lot on those.

No, I’m not interested in my health. I have good insurance. puffy

I should say, we have two boys of 2 years old and 4 months old… the latter being the main concern.

You made the classic pipe smoking parent mistake - you got attached to the kids and now have to adjust your smoking around them! It's better not to get attached and let them go feral like an unwanted cat. Well, it's better on the pipe smoker. It's pure hell on the kids but they toughen up.
