I work as a horticulurist on a golf-course and smoke while I work. Members frequently approach me while I'm working, some because they like the atmosphere around me. With time I learned to hold a conversation with people while smoking, it's all about timing. Do be mindful of your salivation, though. Long pulls followed by an immediate response can lead to embarrassing drool.

The art of conversation while smoking a pipe is a balance of reflection and input, like all things I enjoy about my pipes.

I also happen to agree that cigars are a more appropriate smoke for animated conversation. I have a cigar when I golf.

I'm only a few months into this pipe smoking journey so I'm guessing certain things will change with time. One of the things I have noticed about myself is that I do not like to talk while I'm smoking. I like to read, watch TV, have a coffee or a cocktail, and even peruse the internet. What I don't like to do is try to carry on a conversation with anyone. This causes me to seek out solitude when I reach for a pipe. It may be because I use re-breathing and retro-haling almost exclusively. I think I have the terms correct. These don't seem to me to be conducive to chatting. Is this common or is this one more odd ball trait I seem to be so fond of?
I often have no electronic devices and enjoy the out doors with my smoke. I have fewer relights and I can taste the leaf better. For me the fewer distractions the better. Obviously you can’t always do this but I try.

I see it as a blessing if you intend on having a really thoughtful conversation. It gives you a chance to really assess what you want to say. Hopefully the person you're speaking to is patient and understanding xD

I find cigars are much more a social smoking thing, pipes i enjoy more smoking alone.
Same here. Although I can talk while smoking a pipe and I have a friend whom we always smoke together while having a walk in the night, I also noticed that I need to pay attention to the pipe and it bothers me when I can't. If we just sit, smoke and talk, it's okay for me, but if we roam the city at night, I definitely choose a cigar instead.

I don't like talking in general, so I'm with you 100%, to me pipe time especially is quiet time, but in general if I don't have to talk I won't talk, people always tell me I'm a good listener but I honestly don't do much of that either, I just pretend to.

The contradiction between pipe smoking and having a good conversation points up some of the defects in our contemporary concept of conversation. People have been trained to talk fast and competitively, so pauses and reflective silences are not acceptable. We talk at eachotxer, don't listen much, and always endeavor to supersede what another person is saying.

In a pipe smoking session, silences are welcome. These permit people to reflect on what the other person or people have said and to carefully consider your own reflections and responses. It is a very different style of conversation, and in many ways a much better one.

In some indigenous cultures, pauses between speakers in the conversation are just simple good manners, to show that you have heard the other person or people and are carefully crafting thoughts for a response.

One ritual was to pass a sea shell, or in some cases a tobacco pipe, between participants in a conversation to make sure that each person got a turn while the others were silent to listen attentively.

So, slow it down. Pause while the other person packs, lights, or tamps his pipe.

This does not make good youTube, TikTok, podcast video or audio. It is a different world. Hmmm...good.
