You can't 'talk' and smoke a pipe. At least not effectively.

I do enjoy hanging out and smoking with a friend where you don't have to fill every second with words. I also appreciate that it forces one to slow down, talk less, and listen more.

Most conversations are two people talking and nobody listening. Pipes are meant for a deep thoughtful discussion, and pointing your pipe at your poignant words gives them instant street cred. Just sayin...

Now, I’m known to have difficulty chewing gum and walking, but anyone who’s met me knows that I can talk anywhere, anytime, while doing anything.
I started smoking a pipe and quickly joined two different pipe clubs. We talk, and solve all the world’s problems. So I “grew up” smoking and talking.

You should see me run an auction while juggling chainsaws.
Thank you for the laugh, if this was a cigar herf and not a public board i would have just said exactly what i was thinking and then laughed, but I still got to laugh, so thank you.

Whatever it was that you were going to say, it was probably true.

No. No talking here. But I pretty much smoke in my yard. Neighbors largely ignore me when I smoke on my front stoop. Oddly, when I’m in my backyard which is much more private I get engaged more. Mainly by this chatty new neighbor. It is kind of annoying that there must be an acknowledgment of my presence by her saying hi simply because we are both in our backyard simultaneously. Hi has become 45 minutes several times now. But mainly just want to be in my sanctuary unmolested, and to not have a drawn out smoking experience. My new move is to announce how I forgot something on the stove and must run off. I finish my pipe on the upper deck which has a better divider screen a few minutes later.
She will end up thinking “man that pipe fellow is a bit weird…..he always has something on the stove!!!!

I find that at pipe clubs or when trying to be social while smoking a pipe, I am just not really giving much focus on the taste or flavors. I watch guys take a puff puff and then wave the pipe around as they talk. It's all a waste of tobacco, IMO. When I want to talk, I set my pipe down. When I want to smoke, I walk away from all the people, or set around people who know that I am not being rude, just smoking.

Newer pipe smokers seem to benefit the most from social smoking. Well, they think they do, at least until they realize that keeping a pipe in chock and smoking as slow as humanly possible is the key. Then... it's time to get away from the group.

If I am going to socialize, I grab a few cigars.

I find that funny. That in a group or one on one I don't have that issue but talking on a phone suddenly it's too much and I start puffing instead of paying attention to the pipe.

More often than not, I smoke with me, myself, and I. With some interaction with the household, which I don't mind. During the height of the sickness, I was part of an on-line smokers "club," more of a video chat for people who smoked pipes and wanted some conversation. That worked out ok, and had some really good conversations, you could join when you wanted, and leave when you wanted or had to.

Me in a Skype pipe club, would be just me with a pipe in my mouth. It's not very exciting, ha ha. I did one with members here, and either I talked and put the pipe down, or I just smoked and turned the microphone off.

If I go back to when I was 21 years old, when I started smoking mostly Cuban cigars, I have had this feeling until now. That is, smoking in solitude, either at work or at home. With pipe tobacco, the same thing happens to me. I need solitude, not talking, using the computer at home, or watching a good movie or documentary. When I work with my truck, it is also a pleasure, since I am concentrated, while smoking, I mean a cigar, and at the same time working in solitude. It seems that the older I get, the more I like to enjoy these pleasures in solitude.

For me I use my pipe like a pointer during conversation to make my point. Like an extension of my hand. Pipe in means I'm listening or thinking and pipe out means I'm about to pontificate. Before he passed my father and I would converse like this. We would opine over a pipe and a pack of luckys. When he spoke the cig would bounce around like a baton conducting the NY philharmonic. I miss those times. Thanks for bringing that memory back for me.
