I do 95% of my pipe smoking while out walking dogs and the cadence is just something that you have to get a feel for over time. After doing it for 4 years it's become so automatic I don't even think about it anymore. With the pipe clenched in my mouth I just slowly breathe in and out through my nose as I walk and the natural suction of breathing through my nose draws smoke into my mouth, which I occasionally exhale from my mouth every few breaths or retrohale through my nose to get a good taste of it. If the smoke starts thinning out I'll give the pipe a short gentle puff or two to get it going again, but most of the time I'm just slowly breathing in and out through my nose with the pipe clenched and letting the smoke from the pipe drift into my mouth on it's own accord. That's the "breath method" in a nutshell. You don't smoke the pipe, the pipe smokes you. puffy

I must admit, I enjoy doing something that is really an odd throwback to an older age and the "What's he got in his... oh" looks that I get.... like when I ride my donkey to walmart and park it in the handicapped slot.
One time I was in a bar with my buddy, and he was rolling a cigarette so I pulled out my Peterson Junior lovat and started filling it, and as we both finished our preparations we had placed our respective tobacco systems on the bar to wait for the bartender so we could both order another pint to take outside and enjoy with our respective smokes. As we waited, the barback briefly stopped his stride to sort of surreptitiously inspect the pipe and cigarette, and as he walked back towards the bar’s dish machine we heard him mutter to himself “huh, tobacco” :ROFLMAO:

I'm sure this will be a bit of a hot take, but I think using the term "lunting" is pretentious. I get where it came from, and all that, but to say of oneself that you went lunting is... just foppish.
I certainly would like to hear a better term suggested?

I can’t go better, but I can go different.
Alternate terms could include:

Bonking
Palking
Wiping
Clampering
Hot-footin’

Yeah, we can only go straight down into the depths of hell when we leave “lunting” behind.

I abhor the term, and find the topic almost humorous. But that’s just me.
I’d say that 10-20% of my pipe smoking is done in the manner that the majority of most members here: carefully preparing the pipe and tobak, then spending an hour sitting and smoking reflectively.
I smoke outdoors exclusively, but I also haven’t worked in an indoor space for an entire shift in over twenty five years.
Just this week I’ve smoked my pipes while jackhammering concrete, running a tractor and a backhoe, loading/unloading heavy equipment, digging, tending animals, driving stick in traffic, piping and finishing concrete, etc.

I’m grateful it’s not as complex a task as it’s made out to be, out I probably wouldn’t be doing it.

The only thing I haven’t figured out is how to smoke a pipe successfully while welding, the hood makes that a pain.

This probably explains why the vast majority of my posts in the WAYS thread are of everyman style pipes from eras gone by.

Yep. Get into the practice of having a pipe in your mouth while taking a hike or a long walk and if you find you enjoy this, you'll find your way that works. Taking a leisurely stroll while smoking is easy.

You'll have more relights.
they go together so well. I swear it's got enough of a pain killing effect and enough stimulation to make the walk go smoother. Nothing dramatic but enough to make it nicer and maybe add a short amount of distance to the walk.
