Yes always or dump it and load a new bowl, don’t want to smoke nice tasty tobacco through old tobacco ashes and yuckies.

Unless you want to be sucking ash, yes, dump your bowl before you reload.

Already answered. If you want to get wild you can totally parfait it, where you pack a little of one, then a little more of another. Try some Brown flake scented on top of some SWRA.. it's a wild ride.

Edit - I should mention that I mean when you are loading a pipe fresh.

If I prepare to much flake, then sometimes I will add the remaining rubbed out flake once I get to half a bowl remaining.

Having actually tried adding fresh tobacco to a bowl half-way through smoking it I can say it is a very bad idea.

I was told to never dump ashes until the final draw, true? Looks like one would be smoking ashes instead tobacco.

There are some pipes where the ash is a perfect insulator if the bowl goes out and no amount of flame will ignite the tobacco at the bottom of the bowl. I'll do what it takes when it comes to an ash dump. Bottom line for me if the bowl is "off" or something is messing with the chi of the smoke I'll dump the entire thing and move on, a couple of pennies tossed.

Been there, tried it - no good.
Better off to try and smoke the whole thing, or dump it and start fresh.

You will burn the new tobacco and all the while make the bottom half twice as damp and gross as usual.

Seemed like I was getting the same question out of "dis" one, lol - but now I'm seeing the replenish vs. dump angle.

Don't replenish. If you do, dump everything, including dumping the ash --- any more dump distinctions I'm calling Kramer's Dr. Ashman!

When I take out more tobacco then I need, and really don't want to put it back in the jar, I top it. Usually before I smoke the half bowl. And after dumping the ashes.

Each leftover goes into a corresponding can. It's as simple as that. I don't like to add fresh tobacco with half-smoked tobacco.
