I’m an avowed lover of older Britwoods and most of mine have group 3-4 chambers

A few are group 1-2 eg the following 2

Then there are operas with their oval chambers -designed for a short smoke during the interval.
And to fit in a waistcoat pocket

However “small” does not always translate into small bowls
Quite a few are shortened (nosewarmer) with normal sized chambers, such as the following two

Always good to have a choice
Although I don’t seem to reach for my diminutive pipes much
I prefer a 40-45minute smoke mostly

My favorite clay is a Markus Fohr #13 which is fairly small. Usually it's sufficient. But sometimes a larger pipe is called for. Variety is the spice of life! 😀

Note that the bowl is oval in shape and not circular. So the volume of the chamber is less than that of a briar of equivalent size.
@Michigan_Bill I'm only smoking clay sized bowls:)

I have two mm pony express cobs. The bowl is a little too narrow to pack anything complicated in, at least for me. Just last night I found the best packing method is the codger scoop with finely cut tobacco. Anything more complex leaves me with an overly packed pipe that won't smoke well, but that's just a me thing. I'm still learning.

I consider a small pipe to be under 50 grams and most of my collection are in that range.
XX Ashtons, KK Sea Rock Castellos, Dunhill Grp 3's
But not nose-warmers either, most are bent billards or rhodesians, etc.

For smalls I'm a big fan of the Rattray's Mary series. I have a couple and plan to add a third. Great smaller bowl size without the short stem many others sport. I use them for shorter sessions and nic-bombs. I also find myself, with such variety of blends, and such limited time, preferring shorter smoking sessions in general. My mouth also can't handle a 45-60 minute smoke like it used to.

My collection is predominantly larger pipes. I only have two small pipes one of which is a Tom Eltang Devil Anse.
Nice little pipe, for about a 40 minute smoke.
Only ever smoked Three Nuns in it, BTW.
My other smaller pipe is a Dunhill Group 4, from the 30's, way smaller than other Gp4's in my collection, a little over 5" in length, 0.90oz, Bowl Height: 1.76 in., Chamber Depth: 1.50 in., Outside Diameter: 1.25 in., and a whopping Chamber Diameter: 0.83 in.

So I got to wondering why one should have at least one small pipe. Most of mine are medium + but today I got a Bantam bowl for my Falcon collection. It is very compact and bijou, but I think it may be the perfect vehicle for enjoying slow burning flakes, eg St Bruno. Also for a short smoke maybe ? Testing new blends perhaps ? I reckon with a relaxed cadence, I might get a one hour smoke if I'm lucky. Do you have any small pipes and what do you smoke in them ?

I do and they are great for leaving me wanting more.

Depends on the shape of the bowl. I'll fill a narrow bowl with a Virginia or VaPer flake and a billiard or pot with an English or Oriental. I have a small Peterson's Deluxe that works great.
