I think you've won this thread before it's even begun. What a very very odd object.

Id say the mirror is to see if the tobacco is lit. I use an antique Beattie Jet Lighter thats smooth nickel plated to view inside sometimes when lighting. Think thats it?

Not in a million years, that pipe's made out of plastic. You can see the mould line on the close up of the bowl and mirror.

Ah, that's a scarce example of a Secret Sam Pipe, reputedly made with 100 year old Algerian plastic

and finely crafted by veteran injection-molding craftsmen!

Someone paid $400 for this last night, a no-name Dr. Seuss-like oddity.

This is a Baechtel, made in the 1920's, curiously made and patented in my small Maryland town. I'd like to fine one someday. I lost this one on Ebay, by a few bucks, to the gentleman in England who runs the Metal pipes site.

It's like a radiator to cool the smoke. Would be like a 24" church warden

Al, believe it or not, that was once a $2,000 pipe!

LOL
It's a Jobey Dansk Fancy, I think.
It looks just like the one from this 1976 Tinder Box catalog,

I snapped a trio of pix, I couldn't believe it when I saw you had posted it, that I actually kind of recognized it LOL grabbed the catalog and sure enough, it looks damn near the same...

Ah-ha! Great detective work. I saw this on another forum and after it was sold, I commented "the buyer must have known something we don't". I thought perhaps I'd seen that shape before, the unstamped briar threw me off.
On the Baechtel, it came with discs that fit into the screw-off chamber cap, to collect moisture. The pipe on Ebay I bid on was unsmoked and came with the box and all paperwork, including this pamphlet. I was surprised to see it was made in Hagerstown MD, my hometown. The patent owner was a prominent local attorney, and apparently a fellow in search of a dry smoke!
