The reason for making this post was a recent article on SP. I had no experience with a XXL pipe prior to accidentally buying pictured pipe from the Bay. The main reason for the purchase was that I recognized the little known maker. Only one long distance photo and no measurements. When it arrived it was XXL not a size that I would normally added to my collection. At first I thought it might make a good paper weight and even contacted the seller that he could have realized a better price if he listed by the pound. Upon light up, I changed my mindset, super long excellent smoke. Dimensions : 3 inches tall, 3 wide, 1/2 wall, overall 7 long. Finger holds on shank.

I had a nice Tinsky giant apple I got from Smoking Pipes. It was a weird situation, though. They sold it as new and when it got to me, it had a few small scratches on the bowl. I showed it to them and they said to please send it back so they could touch it up.

Then they told me (upon receipt) that there was nothing they could do to fix it, didn’t give me the option of keeping it, refunded my money, and I never saw it again.

I was actually a little pissed because I really wanted that pipe. Poured the money into a big commission from Dragon Briars that I’m currently selling because it never grew on me the way the Tinsky did.

I enjoy and collect Ropp pipes and especially like their pipes made from Cherry. When I got the opportunity to get another very early example made in Bussang from the late 19th Century I was very happy. The original photos gave no sense of scale. I was expecting the size of the pipe to be like the one in the lower right of the photo below. What I got was the behemoth. As I unboxed it, my eyes popped out of my head as I unwrapped the separate pieces. I was unprepared for how huge it was.

It’s cumbersome, but, I love it. It provides a three hour smoke and is the perfect height to set beside me on my chair and sip while I work at the computer. A Savinelli 320 KS and 12 ounce Coke can are shown for scale. It’s about 26 inches in length.

Holy crap, Batman! If that Ropp was much bigger, a developer here would market it as a "cozy condominium" and sell it for $1,000,000.

So you just use the bottom pipe as a tamper?

Per Rich : xl blocks without defects are hard to find and effect retail pricing, so if you want to scratch the itch be prepared to spend your lunch money. Also it was his opinion that physical stature may be considered if you care about how it looks while smoking. Strange but may have some merit ?

Does anyone know what technically constitutes a "magnum"? Is there an industry standard? A "magnum" of champagne is 1.5L, anything else not a magnum.

When I think of a "Magnum" pipe I think a chamber diameter of .85" or greater combined with a chamber depth of 1.75" or greater. But is there an industry dimension threshold for the claim of magnum? Or are we just left to let Rich Esserman judge each pipe individually. I know Rich has a minimum threshold for what he considers a "Magnum".

That's a good question. Too me it is an unusually large pipe compared to other 'large' pipes. There is no standard in the pipe world that I know of.

The Gresham Magnum and Sydney P Ram pipes above chambers are 1 inch by 2 inches. The Orlik is 0.9 by 2.25. the Barling's is 1.1 by 1.4, but it's a pot, so...

Those are chamber, not bowl, dimensions.

That's a great question and I genuinely don't know the answer. I also suspect that there isn't one seeing as I can't even get a straight answer on Canadian v. Lumberman v. Lovat v. Liverpool :)

Most of the pipes I have are billed with adjectives of bigness, but none of them bear the name Magnum.
