I like my extra large pipes both for long deliberative smokes when I'm lucky enough to have that time, but also for intermittent smokes, to start in the evening of one day, then let the pipe go out and resume in the morning after breakfast or even the next afternoon.

I'd be embarrassed to post any of my pipes as large after chasing embers' posts, so I'll just say my largest is a semi-rusticated slightly bent Johs apple, definitely a Group 6, but not extra large by the standards of this thread.

Does anyone know what technically constitutes a "magnum"? Is there an industry standard? A "magnum" of champagne is 1.5L, anything else not a magnum.

When I think of a "Magnum" pipe I think a chamber diameter of .85" or greater combined with a chamber depth of 1.75" or greater. But is there an industry dimension threshold for the claim of magnum? Or are we just left to let Rich Esserman judge each pipe individually. I know Rich has a minimum threshold for what he considers a "Magnum".

Of course. You just give it the @Chasing Embers test. If Duane would own it, it’s considered magnum. I thought this was commonly accepted knowledge?

That's a great question and I genuinely don't know the answer. I also suspect that there isn't one seeing as I can't even get a straight answer on Canadian v. Lumberman v. Lovat v. Liverpool :)

Most of the pipes I have are billed with adjectives of bigness, but none of them bear the name Magnum.
Canadian= oval shank, taper bit
Lumberman=oval shank, saddle bit
Liverpool= round shank, taper bit
Lovat= round shank, saddle bit.
