Here’s another one. And it’s a Ser Jacopo! I’ll call it the eczema rustication. Maybe it’s actually called “lava flow” but it looks like a cheap Halloween costume.

I've got eczema, that's straight up psoriasis!
I just bought the largest and gnarliest and ugliest Marxman to ever leave 27 West 24th Street.
This monster is so long it needs a special box.
It has an oblong bowl with an uncentered bore. It was so soft they didn’t dare try carving on it, so they hammered and drilled holes instead.
This pipe was not beaten with an ugly stick.
This is an ugly stick!
But for $48 not every kid on the block will be likely to have a Pre 400 Specialty Freehand almost new in the box.
Watch me color this thing a dark reddish brown. That came from a gigantic plateaux of Algerian briar.

That is uglier than sin ! But see how it smokes great ! What the hell are those holes on the rim ? Exhaust outlets ?
If it doesn’t smoke well, you’ll have one hell of an incense holder !
Even the tenon is ugly ! That qualifies for “FUGLY”, which is ugly turned up to eleven !!

The seller claims it’s a Doodler style. Those drilled holes were thought to be attractive.
I have a bunch of Marxman pipes. They have carvings, cuts, and gouches and sometimes lines.
The tooling on the sides looks like it was done with an electro pen engraver.
But I’d say it was a series of hammered dents made my hammer and a punch tool.
God only knows how soft and huge a block of briar that was made from.

It had to be fitted to the flat shank.
Then there are two steps to it, both had to be fitted.
The ugly tan briar color is what Algerian briar looked like, until within just a few smokes it colors like this:

I see no evidence that this pipe is a Marxman. The box and pamphlet are not evidence. Where is the branding?

That’s a Marxman box, that is certain, and it’s a special box large enough for that Doodler.
That Marx pamphlet is not like others I’ve seen. It’s folded and has eight sides. Look how it fits that special big box. That’s all Marxman.
That’s Algerian briar, though. Look at it.
And that saddle stem is Marxy looking too.
And it’s nearly eight inches long, two and a half inches tall.
What a moose!
It should weigh over a 100 grams and might hold 12-4 grams of tobacco.
It could be the guy had some enormous super long Jumbo (I’ve not seen one over 7 inches yet) that required that yellow box.
And his kids put the wrong pipe in it.
But odds are that’s the way a Doodler looked.
