drezz: I am glad I am not the only one who has trouble keeping tins closed. That is why I like the small mason jars. A 50g tin turns into one jar for now and one for later. Now that I have seen Shaintiques open stash I will have more trouble resisting popping a couple more tins.
Stickframer: I think our tastes are pretty similar as that looks like a nice stash. I have or want to order pretty much everything there.

I have a 50 gram tin, which I bought with my first pipe, and which I thought was enough until I run out and then would simply just get another. Suddenly I want to buy more (a lot more). I just happen to have a built-in bookshelf in my man cave that has recently become empty and would look quite nice with pipes and jars of tobacco. Hmmmmm I think I might have to quit hanging out here already!

Yes, welcome and run while you can. We are an understanding lot here and only offer advice and encouragement, never advising to cellar tobacco unless necessary, and it's always necessary.

Great looking cellars, gents. I can't wait til I actually can get around to creating my space...
@shaintiques - Dave, my favourite part of your cellar is your guardian wizard and Ent. Every cellar needs a protector or two.

Great looking cellars guys. Now let us play a different game. Type your addresses and what time you're not in the house.......just kidding.....unless you have Dobie's tins.

Nah! I'm not feeling self-conscious, seeing all those beautifully arranged, warehouse-sized cellars Pfffft... Who needs all those endless shelves of mouth-watering tins and 50+ pipe collections? Not me! I'm golden with my two little half-full shelves. Oh, G-d, who am I kidding? I wanna sob. Well, here's my "cellar". Oh, and I also have a Boston, like daimyo.

Yeah your Boston expresses my feelings about my "cellar" as well.
This might be out of line.... Actually it is out of line, but it feels as though I'm spending a lot of money... Yet my "cellar" requires quotation marks. For the love of God, how much are you serious TAD people spending?!?!

What is it with those Wessex tins? The hardcore chaps have those stashed away like it's the cure for every illness ever.

There appears to be a general consensus that WBCDF is a delicious smoke now, will age to become better, and will be worth every penny on the aged tobacco market in future years when the retail price of current production tobaccos is higher.

Well for the inquiring mind tobaccocellar says I have spent $7738.00 for 139 pounds, 6.5 oz and that works out to an average of $3.47 per oz. Not a bad average. It also says I only have 3 years and 8 months of stock on hand so excuse me I am off to the Internet to add some more.

Wow Zito!!!!! That was seriously fast and very seriously specific lol that gives me some perspective! Much appreciated!! I'm spending around couple hundred/month on new product, but my buying vintage tins is dragging my tin count down substantially, but I had a curiosity that needed satisfying to encourage me to age my own. Had I not spend $300 for a tin I'd've substantially more product. I'm all done with vintage for the most part. Time to focus on total weight a bit more :)

iamn8, or you can look at it as $6.07 for a 1.75 oz tin. Since I am retiring next year, I have hit the cellar hard and heavy which is why I have been working so much OT. So when I retire I start with the ARO's and English's and then I will have aged VA, VaPer and VaBur's to smoke. At a tin a week I have enough for 15 years and buying say 10 tins of new blends each year I will be covered for 20 years with a minimum of cost. Besides the cost of baccy is not getting cheaper as we all are aware, so there is a method to my madness. Or I could just be bat crazy.
In either case, I thought about the aged tin purchases but I thought being so new, would I truly appreciate them since I don't have anything to compare them to. So I went for quality and quanity, can you see I work with numbers LOL.

Now from another perspective, Booker was kind enough to send me a variety of 8 years old flakes to try and they are great, especially the Balkan Flake. But as he said the Balkan Flake I can get today is just not the same so where does that leave me, something I really enjoyed that I can't get or replicate.
I am glad you obtained some of these old blends and enjoyed them. But at spending 200.00 a month now you will equal me in 3.75 years and now it does not seem like I spent a lot.
The fact for me is I don't have time on my side at 61 years old so my only choice was to cellar heavy and get the aging started. You are young and hopefully many years of piping to enjoy. Cellar now the new blends in earnest and when you hit my age your stuff will have 10, 15 and 20 years age on them. I wish I had that time.
Now this is not to be taken to cellar heavy, well yes it is. LOL

Well here is the start :p I went down to my B&M today to get a few different types of English and Virginias to try out. $70 for 75 grams! Oh Canada.... :/

reverendthom, I hope you enjoy the blends you got to try. But as above it's a case in point on cellaring. Not from just an aging point but from a cost perspective. $70.00 for 75 grams of tobacco or 75g= 2.645547oz and that comes to

$26.00 per oz. Assuming the US cost is only half as high my 744 (2231 oz's total)tins (Includes bulk in 8 oz. jars) would cost me $29,003.00.
My recent TAD post shows what I just got from three vendors and I spent a total of $320.00 for the equivalent of 36 1.75oz tins or $8.88 a tin. Now we can all say what we want and who knows what the future will hold but I have no problem believing that baccy prices could go up at least 50% within the next five years, just look at what Mac Baren did recently. So from that perspective it could cost me $11,607.00 to replace what I have now in the cellar.
Just also consider if the smaller manufacturer's go out of business or get bought up and only a few remain, Would the prices go down, I think not.
So there you have my case for cellaring.
