I got these a few years ago and never posted them - a pair of featherweight 240's.

I smoke these two probably more than any of my other pipes.

Would anyone know if Stanwell made this shape in a vario or golden danish finish? I rarely see this shape come up as estates.

It was made in the Vario finish. I pulled the pic off Amazon. The pipe, is of course, unavailable.

My first pipe back when I was about 15, was a Stanwell Vario 63. I still have it. It's in the photo below. Still pretty nice looking for a 30 year old pipe.

The 64M on the top has a stock church warden stem. IIRC, that was a $50 upcharge from the factory (back around '92). Now they just do the HCA pipes.

I have an 04N shape (quarter bent apple with sloped ferrule) coming in the mail. Probably a mis-stamp, should be 04M. Has a push stem like all the other military mounts above, and will probably be interchangeable with them as well. I should note that it, like the 20, is stamped "Hand Made" as well.

I'm a sucker for the Stanwell military mounts. I keep telling myself I'll (probably) stop when I have a seven day set.

A substantial billiard with a subtle sinuous panelled oval shank and stem.
Stamped DeLuxe but with a couple of visible fills.
The crown and “S” on the stem is stencilled rather than inset.

Probably made in the days before the closure of the Danish factory as the quality is not as high as my other Danish made Stanwells

Yes, I came across this when I was looking for my Stanwell 11R.

I haven’t come across this shape before and kept on going back for another look. And another.
Before I realised, I had it in my basket

It’s typical Danish styling (if there is such a thing)
A large bowl with an oval, panelled shank and stem with a subtle “S” curve.
And the rounded “chin”

Thick walls make for a bowl that barely gets warm, even if smoked at pace

One of the few English blends I like, probably because it has a subtle coaco topping, smoked in the long discontinued 20M Dublin. This particular pipe is a hand made, reg. era pipe.

It uses the same frazing (sp?) pattern as the 63, but you'll never see a 63 with birdseye on the sides as those always have a plateaux top. Some nice touches not seen on the typical Stanwell pipe is the chamfer on the stem and inner rim of the bowl. It's a superb smoker. I'd love to see them bring this Ivvarson design back to their catalog.

From the dark staining in the letters and lack of any crowned "S" logo, I suspect it's been heavily refinished at some point, unfortunately...

To me, it's still a beautiful pipe.

Edit: I bought this one specifically so I could smoke my beloved 63's when it's windy out, as pipe wind screens don't work on those.

Added a Stanwell Rook to the collection. I believe this one is an earlier model, made by Mr. Larsen, the same fellow who fit the bamboo to Stanwell's bamboo pipes. Surprisingly, given it's size, it's a good clencher. Good smoker too, though I need to go back and fill in the ragged pit left in the bottom of the bowl by the previous owner's over-enthusiastic use of pipe cleaners.

Externally, it looks nearly new. It's a neat trick I'd like to learn how to pull off.
