Almost 25 years ago, my buddy, an excellent craftsman, was laid off and agreed to help me build a fishing cabin near two bass ponds a few acres below my main house. It is an easy five minute walk from the house.

The inside by the fireplace is an excellent site for a pipe during the winter months. The front porch swing is very relaxing during the summer, spring and fall. I know I’m very lucky to have this cabin.

Agreed! Respect other's feelings. No need to subject my kids, and wife to my smoke. Especially since my wife is sensitive to it.
Especially the kids. I knew a guy in high school whose parents chain-smoked cigarettes constantly in the house throughout his entire childhood. He always came to school reeking, teachers and staff always thought he was the one smoking and he was disciplined over it at least once. I later learned via Facebook that he died of lung cancer at 32. I hope his parents - who are still alive - feel good about themselves.

That's very sad and very selfish of the parents.

I worked for a spell as a door-to-door salesman many years ago. usual thing, Office rang round the phone book at random booking appointments, I turned up demonstrated products (air purifiers and vacuum cleaners) and tried to sell them.

I was sent to a house once where a family of five lived. All on welfare. Parents were disabled, adult kids out of work. All of them chain-smoked cigarettes and watched TV all day.
The house was beyond description. I could barely see what I was doing because the light bulbs were so yellowed with nicotine. Every surface I touched was sticky with tar. The walls, the light switches, all the furniture. Cobwebs were black and tacky like they'd been sprayed with glue.
The demo vacuum cleaner I was using was ruined. The tools became caked with tar, the filter gummed up and the smell never left it. I think it was thrown away and they issued me a new one.

I have the room above the garage, just moved in last month after the last kid vacated it and rented a house at college. It is large and comfortable and semi-secluded from the rest of the house. I have some nice furniture that the rest of the family did not want. Solid oak desks that these kids don't value or don't have the space for, and love seats / chairs that were updated after 20+ years. Still in great shape if you don't mind some worn fabric, which I don't! Just broken in nicely.

Fan out the window until I install an exhaust fan and several air purifiers. Lastly I weather sealed the door so that my wife does not smell the smoke. I swear she smells better than my dog! Oh, and thankfully she smells better than my dog 😉
