Well I think now you know what you need to do....@didimauw: My bad I am getting so myopic I miss read the op-ed. You are right I don't have any claws!
I am really enjoying this one (my first), and I think I may need to invest in another.Bump!
I'm real close to pulling the trigger on one!
More pics may help stop me....
Looks real to me, mine were cheap too. You'll know when it starts to color, the foot should color first, You'll know when it does. Here is the dragon claw meerschaum with a lattice egg I referenced earlier. The inside of the egg is meerschaum (based on the wet finger test). I'm doubtful the outside is meerschaum.
For $20, I'm not complaining. I just wanted a test subject before getting a nicer one. While I still haven't tested it, I picked up an antique cutty that I may post about later.

The former pothead in my would have loved these little guys. These are not Meerschaum, but, they sort of fit this thread—they’re miniature Gutta-percha Egg and Claw pipes from Colossus Pipe Factory (top), and KB&B (bottom) from the early 20th Century, circa 1919—these companies, owned by Kaufmann Brothers and Bondy, would eventually morph into Kaywoodie. Quarter shown for scale.

That's great! A looker or a smoker???A 19th century silver-appointed beauty by L.Baumgartner that came my way.
It hasn't been restored but it is usable. I haven't fired it and would be anxious about damaging it!That's great! A looker or a smoker???
Oh my. That thing deserves to be smoked again! Someone clearly loved that one. Should mean it's a great smoker!I just picked up this antique meerschaum claw last week. Tip of the front talon is snapped off, but the stem is sturdy which is a rarity in these century-old pipes and I'm thinking of making it a smoker....
