This LHS has some fills in a strange place. It's right through the nomenclature where it says Purex. It's not finished so there's no pipe porn quality but it's the only one I've ever seen that said Diamonds.

Christmas came early today in the form of this beautiful Sterncrest from Dave G! What a gorgeous pipe with that smokey swirling grain. So fresh and sharp for 60 year old pipe!
Thanks Dave! I definitely owe you. I'm going out to my cave and smoke some Blend No 4 in it right now.

I've been enjoying this newest addition to my LHS collection, a "Purex Preferred". It's the only LHS brand pipe I have that has a few noticeable fills. They don't get in the way of the nice feel and fine smoke though.

This pipe was listed as a "Durex" which initially had me excited to find a new subset of LHS pipes. Turns out the "P" in Purex looks like a "D" to some people. Also, Durex is brand of condom :roll: Since then I've seen this misranding twice more elsewhere.

This thread is like a whole world within the pipe world. I'm especially impressed with the LHS factory in Brooklyn with the company headquarters on site, and the expansive variety of style, shapes and materials used at one time or another. The Bakelite stems and other components are amazing to see. The only existent pipe manufacturing facility I know of, working in briar, is the Dr. Grabow plant in Sparta, N.C. There's also the Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe plant in Washington, Mo., outside St. Louis.

I found this wartime Certified Purex with a vulcanite tenon looking like it had actually been in the war. While it still shows some signs of some battle fatigue, it is back in action.

Nice pipes Mike. How did I miss the Preferred post? That's a beaut. It's strange that the Preferred had fills being a higher grade. I very rarely see any fills in the Certified or Sterncrest models.
@mso,

We are in our own little world of LHS collectors. (All 7 of us) lol.

LHS went out of business in 1960 but they did make a few beauties back in the day.

Found a unicorn!
LHS Sterncrest Special Make 1503
The Special Make was LHS' highest grade. Sold for $25 in the 1940's and is about $300 in today's dollar. They made a model for every budget from $1 up to $25. I now have 2 of the 6 shapes of Special Make's.

This is a huge pipe. A reference of its enormity is how it dwarfs the standard sized pipe stand. Nice straight grain, crisp stampings, no detectable fills and a solid 14K gold band.
