Another is on the way, Flame Grain Meerschaum 09B medium pear.
Dunno what the stinger looks like, that may be only hint to age…
well, it’s a Kaywoodie over Flame Grain Meerschaum, 4 hole big ball skinny stinger with Drinkless marking-can’t tell if it’s pending or patent number on there.
And…..it’s a mortise fitment fused to tenon that’s soaking in alcohol currently (cut 308 case to hold aluminum up to end of mortise piece in alcohol bath, wrapped in foil to lessen evap).
More pics when done-too busy to remember to take good before pics.
Gotta go-picked up and old Kubota I’m getting going…

Not bad turnout for a $16 shipped fleabay buy.
I decided to try a touch of contact cement on the mortise fixture to shank threads, and clocked stinger a hair shy of in-line as the factory did. I’ve leaned to do any bit work with a fine safety edge file before grabbing the micromesh stack….I’m learning.
Still debating a quick CA seal and sand on the non-displaced crack in meer liner.

How did they stamp the little patent numbers on such a skinny stinger?

Does anyone know about when they changed from writing the line of pipe above to below Kaywoodie?

Another try at a question here: I’m seeing “Made in England” pipes over at Reborn that are stamped with KBB in clover leaves. I’m wondering if (1) this indicates that these pipes are early makes, perhaps circa 1930s and (2) I’m wondering who might have made these pipes. Any takers?

Went to a very large twice yearly flea market/antique fare. Since it’s in a very rural area it never really generates much in the way of desirable estate pipes but rather Dr G, Medico, and other basket pipes. But I did score a four hole 76 Flame Grain with a Drinkless/ Reg# stinger that’s been very lightly smoked for $6.
Got a couple of decent Stanley planes one later No.5 and a transitional No.27 both should clean up nicely.

What would you estimate the date as on that?

I notice a Kaywoodie on Etsy stamped 5193B with a clover on the stem. This is listed on Tapatalk as ‘47-72. I guess that’s wrong then?

So to break it down you have to look at the whole number in its individual parts and the pipes other markings.

51= Screw in Drinkless Kaywoodie, black vulcanite, Miami brown, SuperGrain. 1930-40

93B= Medium, long saddle, billiard 1947-72 (clearly they were made in at least 1939 so these dates are wrong)

Shank logo= 1936-1939 No exceptions.

Four digit numbers were starting to be phased out in the late 30’s and early 40’s so clearly 93B was around WAY before 1947.

Great. It’s good to know and an interesting update to that list. I wonder if this is a rare pipe or not. If so, it’s not a bad price at the moment.

All shank logo SuperGrains are fairly uncommon. They are highly collectible, I’d say $100 is pretty good price for one that nice. I have a 5191B which is a nearly identical pipe just slightly smaller. You can see it on Pipedia.
